Personal history
What tale is older than a bard falling into trouble because of a beautiful woman? Such is the tale of Kai Lin.
Once, he was a down-on-his-luck entertainer, a man of few means, who could barely scrape together enough coin to pay for his meals - until, one night, under the light of a full moon, he spotted a beautiful white snake. Curious, he followed it, only to see it transform into a gorgeous young woman and dance under the moonlight. Enchanted by the woman's beauty and the power of her dance, he began to steal her techniques for himself, watching for her each night in secret and then taking a little of her magic, learning a few of her tricks, for himself.
At first, it was simply a matter of making her power his own, but the more he watched her, the more he fell in love with the serpent-woman. Still, he knew she would not take kindly to being watched, so he made sure to leave before dawn, so she would not see him.
But one night, he was so entranced by her beauty, he lost track of the hour. Dawn broke and she transformed back into a snake, and, turning to leave, found him watching her. Though he tried to apologize, she could smell the stolen magic he was using, and cursed him; he would take the form of a monster, half serpent, half human, and he would never see her again.
Desperate to find a way to rid himself of the curse, as well as reunite with her, he searched high and low for any trace of the serpent. Until one night, under a full moon, he found a single white scale.
