An individualistic gun mage scratching a living with extra-legal activities. Doesnt like orders, giving or taking, but will make strong suggestions to make a plan come together.
Growing up, Deacon was a rebellious, fairly ungrateful, shit. He knew he was low born and being used as a tool of the de Niclaeys family and made little effort to hide his distaste for the situation. He leaned into 'malicious compliance' when given orders or duties, a habit that sped his discharge from military service.
Deacon did well and got high marks at the academy, finally getting something useful for himself on his own merit. He made it through the years of training and the only thing between ending this chapter and starting servitude to
House de Niclaeys was a mentorship/apprenticeship period.
His mentor was a real prick and he and Deacon did not get on in the slightest. Through a series of unfortunate events, the runic etchings on his mentor's guns got crossed. This lead to a catastrophic failure and some serious facial wounds. While nothing was proven, blame was placed squarely on Deacon's shoulders.
After this incident Deacon was discharged with full training but no official documentation, so legitimate work was out the window. He reconnected with Dyra and started working as her bodyguard and escort. I'd say they're about the same age give or take
During his time in
Caspia, Deacon signed a contract with
The Curator. In exchange for immediate power, he agreed to serve
The Curator for 1 year.

Deacon learned about arcana because his magical talents set him apart from others and he wanted to press that advantage as much as he could once he had the resources at the academy.
He also learned history and investigation during his time at the academy. Lacking the foundation of innate intelligence, he studied and memorized and worked at it to become at least better than average.
Deception, insight, and intimidation were requirements growing up as a ward in House de Niclaeys. They were, and are, conniving bastards and if you couldn't beat them at their own game, you got eaten alive.
