The Tribal Structure of the Orcs of the Koreen Valley: an Observational Critique by Harguul the Scholar
The Koreen Valley is dominated by the Orcish tribes strewn throughout the lands. These humanoid creatures enjoy a general hierarchy within the tribe where the strongest among them lead the weaker Orcs who worship their individual strength. Although power structures like this are not uncommon throughout history and generally plagued by corrupted power hungry men, the Orcs in the Koreen Valley enjoy a rare form of enlightened leadership in this strength based meritocracy.
In most instances noted in history, it is widely observed that the strong push themselves to the top by ruthless and dreadful means to grab power within their society for selfish reasons. This ultimately leads to dictatorial leadership characterized by harsh treatment of subjects and death for those discontent with the ruling faction. However, powerful Orcs of the Koreen Valley do not propel themselves forward at all, yet ascend to power through the unrelenting support of the orcs they have bested in combat through training, duels, or other acts proving their superior strength. In this way, a strong Orc does not climb the ladder of success through greed or personal desire, yet through the desire of other Orcs to see the strong lead the tribe through battle and protect the tribe from monsters. These appointed leaders are generally benevolent to their tribal constituency and work hard to bring prosperity to the tribe.
This miraculous hierarchy structure leads weaker Orcs to advance their placement within their tribe through perilous encounters to gain powerful weapons or access to powerful shamanistic spells. One would expect these dispossessed Orcs to be discontent and rebel since they must risk their lives to have any access to a higher status within the tribe. Again, however, the Orcs of the Koreen Valley do not have this seemingly obvious problem and have solved this in a peculiar manner. You see, from the year of their birth through their coming of age ceremony at 12 years old, the Orcs of the Koreen Valley are instructed through their parents, trainers, and elders that everyone is to work towards the betterment of the tribe. This doctrine is so readily accepted by the young orcs that in my decade long observation I have yet found one Orc of any age to doubt this to be their true purpose. Even those orcs at the lowest rung of the totem pole accept their lives as herb gatherers, dung shovelers, and street sweepers readily. I would go so far as to believe these Orcs must be a racial subtype of the greater Orc species with a trait for tribal loyalty above all else!
This shared belief that everyone must work towards the betterment of the tribe has lead them to a society with few if any criminals. The most strife that may be seen intra-tribal is competitions between orcs to see who is stronger which commonly leads to a brotherly bond between combatants where one recognizes the other as a candidate for leading him and others into battle. This has also lead to a weirdly backwards view within the Orcs of the Koreen Valley. Many Orcs here have disdain for the outside civilized world and believe their own tribes as the pinnacle of civilization in the world--which has unfortunately lead to these Orcs to rarely speak the common tongue proficiently. On a quick observation of their crude huts and simplistic attire, one could easily attribute their disdain to the ignorance of a closed off society sheltered from the wonders of civilization, yet the Orcs of the Koreen Valley are not strangers to the our civilized society. Frequently, their tribal members would quest out on mercenary contracts or as adventurers of their own far and wide throughout their continent. When asked why after seeing the wide world they still believe their meager living to be superior the Orcs universally state the same thing. They believe that Orcs are superior as they work together towards a greater goal as a whole tribe while within our nation each person works towards satisfying their own ambitions constantly bringing others down so that they may get ahead. Such is their true belief in the teachings that they are destined to work towards the betterment of their tribe.
In conclusion, the Orcs of the Koreen Valley have a unique system of government that, although normally in history has lead to tyrannical rule, has brought an enlightened class of chosen leaders to the tribes in the Koreen Valley ultimately being cemented into place by their racial tribal loyalty and belief in bettering their own tribe.
