This child was not regarded well in Port Mael and was kept away from public eye. Those who knew about the child sought to eliminate the Passell family from their noble ranking out of fear and disgust, erasing centuries worth of family lineage because of the hellish child.
In a panic, and knowing they could not kill the infant, the family was quick to adopt the most perfect baby boy any mortal had ever seen. They would name this boy “Fortune”, who was quick to replace the daunting public image the family had.
Only three years younger, Fortune and Misery grew close despite their parents’ wishes. The innocent boy accepted Misery as she was and sought to befriend her as any good sibling would, untainted by societies bias towards those of her kind. And, though Misery was forced to live in the shadows, she knew she at least had her brother by her side. A brother that was much better with the people and one that was much more loved by the public.
As the daughter of Port Mael nobles that run the city, Misery was brough into wealth and high education. Her father, Mars, has led the city for years after inheriting the position from his father, along with his money.
The wealth that circulates between the houses of Port Mael is not widely liked and draws great temptation from those on the outside looking in and of those of The House of the Commoners.
Though this wealth never made its way near Misery, she spent her younger years stealing in an ever-growing discontented city, hiding, forging, trying to provide for herself. She befriended a few others like her in her times snooping outside the noble household yet received threats and disgusted glances from the rest of those around her.
-----
As Misery grew older, the relationship between her and her brother grew distant. The two maintained a sense of mutual respect and an odd yet understanding connection. Though each understood their place in the society they grew up in and that for each to be successful, they had to maintain their distance.
The trust these two had for each other seemed to stretch against any situation and any problem…
Every birthday, Misery’s stealth grew more and more impressive as she strived to steal increasingly important items around the city leaving no trace. For her 21st birthday, she stole a family secret known only to her parents, sealed and locked by magic. It was terribly easy to steal as no one expected it, but the gift was not easy to unveil.
That night as Misery worked to open her gift, she heard the unsheathing of a sword from outside her window. She A glance out her window revealed 5 armored individuals adorning her family crest speaking in hushed tones.
- “The nobles want this done quick and fast, we take her out, clean up the mess, and toss the body in the river… no more horror and no more trouble for the nobles.. as they wish.”
That night, her parents attempted to exterminate the Tiefling by plotting to kill her. A murder that was planned to sweep any evidence of the child under the rug, never to be seen of and heard from again, relieving the feared and hateful parents and town of their problem and nightmare.
What Misery’s parents failed to realize was that their daughter, a witty, clever, resourceful, and strong woman, equip with years of self-training and knowledge, has sharp senses. She heard the plot out her window, gathered minimal items and bolted out of her cellar towards the edge of the city, escaping to save her life.
With a few more feet to go, Misery comes face to face with three assassins at the edge of her city, all cloaked and armed with a dagger. Two lunges towards her grabbing her arms while the final one in the background emerges ready to enact the final blow. Stepping into a dim light, the eyes of the assassin emerge, and Misery knows those eyes anywhere.
They are the crystal blue, fearful eyes of her brother. The only one she had ever trusted turned on her to do their parents bidding….
Enraged by years of neglect and hate, Misery snaps. And, with an odd but enticing energy rushing through her veins, she lashes out and the assassins that once held her fall to the ground in flame and her brother in horror, shares one last glance and runs away.
Misery collects herself and runs as fast as she can, though horrified at what just occurred. A question that would be answered after she stopped to rest for the night going who knows where doing who knows what.
She feels a hand grip her shoulder and swiftly retracts a dagger from her belt and is ready to attack.
A dark figure reveals himself “that power you felt back there must have felt… exhilarating... Freeing… addicting… I felt your dark resentment and felt you needed a taste of what I could offer you”
Without a word, Misery circles this figure, dagger still raised but pondering his words.
“I can offer you unlimited power, revenge, resources, that someone like you has dreamed of since you were locked away from a society that feared you… but imagine if you gave them something to fear… and you’re in luck, I can give that to you for good but, I need something from you in return. Power has a cost.”
Misery, still apprehensive, is fully enticed by this offer. The Fiend, drawn to her appetite for revenge and great power, offers Misery a deal.
“If you give me that scroll” The field said pointing to the magically sealed family secret sticking out of Misery’s pocket,
I can give you abilities to shatter your wildest dreams. You could rise far above what people expect you to be.”
Rage, neglect, humiliation, and anger running rampant in Misery’s mind, a deal for powerful abilities was an addicting thought that she could not shake. It was a deal that made her hungry and desperate. She accepts a seemingly simple deal with nothing to lose. A damaging family secret for power.
The fiend, named Badrezel, shook your hand to seal the pack. Then, with a wink, he was gone. Suddenly you felt a new strength coursing through your veins, and you understood the powers you had been granted…
