Personal history
Torbran was born under the Silvercap Mountains to his father Hilfgaard and mother Jutta as one of five brothers (Actium, Erasmus, Oswald, Sigfrid). They are of the Boulderbrau line, but swear allegiance to Clan Stonecloak and accordingly bear their name if they travel beyond the mountains.
His family always had enough, and was respected as any other who contributed to the community. He had traditional teachers, who tutored him in the basics of reading, math, and history. Eventually he moved onto the fundamentals of smithing, masonry, and brewing.
As all dwarves are called to at the age of 25, Torbran descended into the mountains to serve his mandatory decade of mining. It was honest work with honest folk. Torbran was skilled enough with his tools. He had more of a talent for spotting ore than gemstones, but each must stick to their skills.
He saw many things in the mines as they delved ever deeper towards the heart of the mountain, as his people had done and will continue to for thousands of years. Tonnes of earth and stone moved and returned. Celebrations for glorious finds or a new shaft opening. The honest struggle of dwarves miles from camp repairing tools with their ingenuity. Relief when the timber carts brought fresh supplies. The sadness of a friend lost to a fatal fall or collapsed beam. Greed that poisoned the hearts of lesser dwarves. The pernicious forces that ever dwell beneath the shadows of stone.
When his time was done, Torbran was inducted with honors into the 505th Miner’s Class. His team had gathered the most silver that decade, a particular point of pride you might hear him bring up over one-too-many flagons of mead, right before he tells you he was his camp’s boxing champion three years running.
Unlike most of his class, he did not renew his contract, and instead joined the military. As farming is for humans, mining is the basis of society for dwarves. Torbran had seen what threatened this pillar, and moved to protect it. His last night at home, he thanked his father and returned his tools. His mother, proud as ever, sent him off with their family’s axe.
Torbran drilled and trained and scouted and fought with some of the bravest dwarves he’d ever met. Even learned a spot of medicine when their cleric died. They fought goblins and orcs, bandits and cultists, barbarians and mountain men. Elementals, beasts, ghosts, shadows. Each wore on Torbran and those around them. Some cracked. Others fled. Torbran swore he’d never leave them any of them behind, but it wasn’t always up to him.
Year after year, Torbran’s unit was beset by tragedy and mysterious events. Missing rations here, a poorly placed piton there, slowly dwindling their numbers. Dreading but ultimately deciding that it could only be the work of one of their own, Torbran silently investigated.
After months of work, he awoke one night to the sound of rustling packs as a few dwarves were stooped over bags and supply crates, clearly looting the place before deserting. Torbran grabbed his axe and flew into a rage, calling out to his fellow soldiers. He slew all but one, the man he had suspected: Mathias Emberspear. Even as his conspirators fell, Mathias was stuffing more loot into a makeshift sack made from the unit’s camp flag. Bent by bloodlust, Torbran tackled him into the campfire, searing Emberspear’s hand with the metal insignia atop the former flag: a five pointed star within a diamond.
Torbran was knocked out but dragged from the fire. When he recovered, he was left with only a shred of torn banner and a story of how Mathias had escaped into the dark.
Feeling defeated, Torbran completed his tour and left the service. He decided he would see the world outside the mountains. To learn to eat and drink and fight like those he’d never met. Eventually he found his way to the Adventurer’s Guild and trained there. Now, once more freshly graduated and having grown comfortable in the biggest city he’s ever seen, he starts anew.
