Birth
Xavfaelor was not just born to Captain Elandir and Vaelora; he was born of the storm and the sea, elements that played deeply into his character. His father, Captain Elandir, was not just a pirate but a bard of the sea, recounting tales of ancient maritime lore and the songs of old sailors. From him, Xavfaelor inherited the gift of diplomacy and a deep, abiding respect for the lore of the ocean.
His mother, Vaelora, was a magus whose spells often protected the ship from supernatural threats. She was a descendant of the Eiloria, an elven line famed for their expertise in elemental magic, particularly water and wind—forces deeply ingrained in the life of a sailor. She taught him the basics of spellwork and the scholarly approach towards the mysteries of nature, explaining the intricate weaves of magical essences that bound the natural world.
Onboard the Stormrider, Xavfaelor was a deckhand, sailor, and a student of both the natural and magical worlds. His days were filled with chores, from coiling ropes to scrubbing decks, but he also had responsibilities that leaned into his burgeoning talents. Under the mentorship of the ship's resident druid, Taranis, he assisted in navigating through treacherous waters by interpreting the calls of sea birds or the patterns of marine life, offering a unique perspective that charts and compasses couldn't provide.
Given his mixed lineage, he found himself acting as a bridge between the human sailors and any elven members of the crew, embodying the spirit of unity through his very existence. His role became particularly essential during diplomatic endeavors, where his natural charm and upbringing made him invaluable in negotiations or in quelling potential mutinies.
Young though he was, Xavfaelor became the moral compass and the heart of the ship, someone who could speak to the elements of air and water just as easily as he could relate to the hardened pirates around him. He may not have fully realized it at that young age, but he was already stepping into a larger destiny—one that the ocean tides and celestial winds whispered about during quiet moments on the midnight watch.
Early Life
The journey aboard the merchant vessel "Serene Horizon" was far from serene. Navigating around the southern coast of Casmaron and through the treacherous archipelagoes that separated Tian Xia from the Inner Sea region tested the mettle of the crew. There were encounters with pirates, curious but deadly sea creatures, and storms that rivalled the one in which Xavfaelor was born. However, the ship's crew soon found that having Xavfaelor aboard was a blessing. His emerging druidic abilities helped them navigate through rough waters and even provided some form of natural sustenance when supplies ran low. It took a total of six months for the Serene Horizon to reach its destination, but they arrived in Goka richer in experience and grateful for Xavfaelor's presence.
Upon his arrival in Goka, Xavfaelor was almost overwhelmed by the cacophony of sights, sounds, and smells. But amid the unique blend of civilization and nature, it was the Wall of Heaven that held his gaze. The mountain range seemed to beckon to him, as if his soul was answering a call only it could hear. It was said that the Wall was a gateway to the divine, and the very essence of nature emanated from its slopes. Intrigued by tales of druids who trained there, seeking to balance the primal forces of nature with spiritual discipline, he felt an irresistible pull and decided to make his pilgrimage there.
Mentor Lanfen
Lanfen was a venerable Tengu monk druid, his feathers graying but eyes still sharp as ever. Though he had long ago renounced any interest in worldly affairs, he saw in Xavfaelor a unique blend of the natural and the spiritual. Lanfen became not just a mentor but a friend to him. His training was unorthodox, using the very elements of nature—wind, water, and earth—to teach Xavfaelor how to climb, how to balance, and how to find harmony even in the harshest of environments.
Under Lanfen's guidance, Xavfaelor trained rigorously, climbing the difficult slopes of the Wall of Heaven by day and studying ancient texts about nature and spirituality by night on Lanfen's small ship. He learned how to use his natural agility to maneuver through the most treacherous terrains and how to tap into his druidic abilities to make the climb more bearable for himself. "You do not conquer a mountain; you conquer yourself," Lanfen would often say. It was through these exercises that Xavfaelor realized his adept capabilities in climbing, a skill that he knew would serve him well in whatever awaited him next.
Return to Avistan
Nine years after leaving for Tian Xia, at age 24, Xavfaelor felt a compelling urge to return home—a sensation like the pull of a tide, beckoning him back to Avistan. Lanfen, sensing his internal struggle, told him: "Even the swiftest river finds its way back to the sea. Your destiny beckons."
Using his accumulated knowledge and some mystical aid, he managed to hitch a ride on a spelljammer, a magical ship capable of traveling great distances. He returned to Avistan to answer the ocean's call, but he knew not for what.
Companion
After several enlightening years in Tian Xia, Xavfaelor felt the call of the sea and his homeland once more. He returned to Avistan, not to the welcoming arms of the Stormrider but to an entirely new adventure. Xavfaelor joined the crew of "The Sea's Whisper," a pirate ship captained by a formidable halfling named Cora "Three-Knives." The crew was diverse, comprised of buccaneers from all walks of life, each seeking freedom and fortune on the high seas. Although he was a stranger, his druidic skills and seafaring talents quickly earned him a place among them.
The Sea's Whisper set its sails towards the Arch of Aroden, a region known for being as dangerous as it was rich in plunder. They had received a tip about a rival pirate ship, "The Sable Serpent," transporting a treasure trove of enchanted artifacts. Cora Three-Knives, ever the opportunist, couldn't pass up the chance for such valuable loot. The air was thick with anticipation as they drew near their quarry. Under the cover of a magical mist conjured by the ship's wizard, The Sea's Whisper made its approach. Cannons roared, and swords clashed.
Navigating through the smoke and chaos, he arrived at the deck of The Sable Serpent. There lay the body of the adult Roc that had been guarding the rival ship, its lifeless eyes staring into the void. Nearby was a chest, engraved with arcane sigils and sealed with a complex lock. Smashing open the chest, Xavfaelor sensed the residual life force within the chest—a solitary Roc egg, pulsating softly as if whispering for hope.
Seeing the egg as a living legacy of the fallen Roc and a symbol of hope in a world of chaos and strife, he carefully placed it into a satchel and returned to The Sea's Whisper. Through a combination of druidic rituals and innate understanding of the natural world, Xavfaelor successfully hatched the egg. The baby Roc that emerged from the shell immediately formed an emotional and spiritual bond with him.
Port Peril
The crew of The Sea's Whisper had to dock at Port Peril to resupply. Xavfaelor, ever introspective, decided to seek out his fate, just as his parents had once done. He was drawn to the Formidably Maid, a tavern famous for attracting those destined for greatness or infamy.
