Yana doesn’t remember much of their early life. Their earliest memories involve the start of their life as a child slave/assistant to a traveling Weequay stage performer, Mohet Vlikkem, who specialized in illusions, which was really a front for a galactic smuggling operation. Vlikkem trained them in the art of sleight of hand, and as such they got very good at being nimble-fingered. Vlikkem was a drunkard and was cruel but never physically abusive. He often forced Yana to fly the ship in his stead, as soon as they were old enough to do so. They cooked, cleaned, fixed up the ship, and took care of everything for the illusionist, getting pretty good at improvisation with mechanics and materials, as resources were often scarce. As they got older their skills only improved. Eventually that lead to Vlikkem using their talents to assist him in “liberating” some items from their unwitting audience to improve their take. But go back too many times to the same well, and you’re bound to get caught. Vlikkem got in over his head with debts to the White Worms and was forced to turn Yana over as a form of repayment. Now Yana’s considerable skills are being used to “pay off the debt” saddled onto them by their former master and earn their keep with Lady Proxima, while also dodging the other enemies Vlikkem made along the way, and the employer himself, who would do almost anything to get his meal ticket back without feeling Lady Proxima’s wrath.
