Perfect
The confidantes of the House of Scarlet Silk were worried.
She'd never outwardly show it, of course, but they knew her well enough to see that something was not right with the mistress of the house today. Alexandra went about her duties, teaching her apprentices, making sure the House's daily affairs were in order, and though she smiled.... it was in the set of her posture, a little straighter than normal. The slower, more precise pronunciation of her words. The way she walked through the House, making sure that there was not a pillow out of place. She spent no time at the Market today, no work in the kitchen.
No, today Alexandra was the Rose Sanguine in all of her perfect, beautiful, precise glory, and the other confidantes... were worried.
After all, she hadn't been quite this bad since before Master Damiano died.
--------------------------------
Sleep did not come to her tonight. In truth, she didn't really try.
She could have dealt with most of it. None of it was pleasant, far from it, but she knew she was strong of heart when it mattered. She had people to take care of, a House to run, a job to do, and she loved all of it. She loved her House and her confidantes, more than her own life, perhaps.
Maybe that was why--
"Again, Alexandra." A crack of riding crop nearby nearly made her jump, but she held herself perfectly, pouring the tea without a single tremor of her hands. "That's better. Now, the wine." This time, a single drop strayed down the side of the goblet, and she winced. The riding crop lifted her chin, and she stared up into the cold, smiling gaze of her Master.
"I'm sorry, Master, I--"
The riding crop lashed out suddenly, striking her journeyer-sibling Tabiethe across the knuckles. The younger confidante cried out. "You know better, Alexandra," Damiano said, still smiling, still cold.
Alexandra hurried to pour another glass, careful this time not to spill a drop. "No, look, I've got it, I promise, please don't hurt her. Please. I'm sorry."
He grabbed her by her crimson hair, tilting her head back, the riding crop resting against her throat. "You know better. And you will be better. You have so much potential, Alexandra. It would be such a shame to waste it. Do not disappoint me. Now, again."
Alex's eyes snapped open with a strangled sob. She had to try harder. She couldn't let the House be taken away from her. She had too many people depending on her, and if she had to be perfect, then perfect she would be.
It had taken her years to step out of Damiano's shadow after his death, but some ghosts never truly stop haunting.
The major events and journals in Alexandra's history, from the beginning to today.
