Aquam grew up deep below the Gold Run in the underwater city of Undercurrent, spending most his days lounging around and bumming or stealing what he needed, often getting himself in trouble in his younger years. As he grew older, and his reputation more nefarious, Aquam began to wander outside the great metropolis. He would sit along the edge to the great unknown for hours and watch the looming, massive shadows of great beast go by, and he would recount the tales of all kinds of strange and dangerous sea creatures his people used to tell him to make him try and be more obedient. These tall tales never truly scared Aquam, but he always had a respect for these massive beast, and in a way, a strange longing to be as free as they were.
One day, as Aquam was hiding among the great vastness of the open ocean, he felt something calling to him. A deep, primordial hum that vibrated every ounce of his being. It overwhelmed him, it beckoned him to swim further, deeper, into the fathomless depths. And swim he did. As he swam, he began to see a massive, looming shadow of an unimaginably large creature that seemed to surround him like a great serpent. The hum became waves of feelings. A feeling of sacrifice, then a feeling of power, then a feeling of freedom. Aquam felt his mind steady, and he began to understand, he must sacrifice something for power, for the freedom he had been longing for since he was a young boy.
Aquam's first few days among the surface folk was full of strangeness and wonder, and a fair amount of fear. Aquam had suddenly felt so overwhelmed by the difference in cultures, he was realizing that he had lived such a sheltered life, but the feeling of fear didn't last long. He could feel the serpent tugging his mind to new ideas. "So many new opportunities" he thought as his fear turned to excitement. It was like his potential had been shackled for so long, but now it had been left free, and Aquam new he couldn't disappoint his new patron.
As the months past, and Aquam began to explore this strange, new world, causing bits of chaos wherever he went, he found that the authorities are much less lenient when they haven't known you for your entire life, forcing him to use his strange magic to slip his way out of several close encounters. Aquam eventually started to make a name for himself among the shadier folk on the currents and began to make friends in high places. Aquam even made friends with a high ranking navy officer who would ask favors of Aquam in exchange for fine wines, exotic foods, and expensive drugs, even getting his hands on a drop of Devils Nectar. Little did he know, the Nectar was stolen, and he was arrested for a crime he didn't commit. Aquam knew Marcus was the real culprit, but he also knew that he was too valuable an ally, and too powerful an enemy, to make it worth trying to worm his way out of this trouble. So he would wait out his sentence, and maybe even make a little trouble in the meantime.
While Aquam was serving his sentence, Clinton, the local Chaplin, had taken an interest in his strange powers and made an offer to help reduce Aquam's sentence if he would teach him about his power. Aquam saw an opportunity, if he could pull it off, to both fulfil this deal and make a fool of this man while doing so. He slowly convinced Clinton to siphon one of his magical tattoos so that he would be able to gain a shard of his powers. What Aquam failed to mention was the tattoos leave the one marked with grave desires and the feeling of always being watched. As the curse set into Clinton's mind, he began to regret his decision and he tried to plea Aquam to take it back. The deal had already been struck, and Aquam new his sentence and bail had already been reduced, he had gotten what he wanted. Clinton became enraged, the curse inflaming his desires, and he tried to attack Aquam. The guards stopped the assault and took Clinton away. Between the assault and the mark of the great serpent that now plagued him, it was easy to see why the World Navy revoked his position, but now he vows to find Aquam and get his vengeance once he's a free man.
After some time passed and less eyes were on Aquam, his old friend Marcus Broadside, paid his reduced bail and left him with some emergency funds and a note.
"I appreciate your silence and compliance, it will not soon be forgotten, but I'm afraid if we are seen together too soon, we will draw suspicion. For now, lay low and don't get into any trouble. Keep this as an IOU for whenever your favor needs repaid."
Aquam pocketed the note, used the coin to get on the first boat out of town, and tried his best to lay low. He succeeded for a short while, but his troublemaker nature, emboldened by the serpents call, forced him to spread his wings once more.
Aquam soon found himself taking a liking to the idea of the pirate life. Being able to explore the sea freely without worrying about the law, freedom to take what he wanted, and no one to judge him for his previous misdeeds. And so, he found himself searching for a crew who would take him in, which wasn't to hard given both his magic and his demeanor fitting right in to the pirate style of business.
Aquam figured if he could find a small, less experienced crew, they would be quick to accept any strange castaways like himself. He found what he was looking for in the form of Cassandra Bilgewater, a young and excitable woman with something to prove and a need for hands on the deck. Cassandra harbored a small crew of 12 when Aquam joined their troupe and Aquam got to quick work getting in good with all of them.
