Cunning, impulsive, and charming, Bastion is a young urchin from the streets of Dunekeep. A troubled life led him to crime, but witnessing a brutal assassination sets him on a path of intrigue, retribution, and romance.

Bastion lived in the town of Brill, with a younger brother that he looked after. Neither ever knew their parents or where they came from. The two were orphans and gutter rats, ignored mostly by the inhabitants of the town, until they were blamed for a house fire they did not commit. Fleeing Brill, the two were picked up by roving bandits with ill intent. Bastion escaped with his brother, only to become separated in the woods. Bastion was recaptured, never to see his younger brother again.
 
The brigands abused the young Tiefling, bringing him south to Dunekeep to sell him into slavery. Some miles outside of the city, Bastion escaped once more, fleeing the brigands and taking refuge near an old farm house.
 
There, he was greeted by an old farmer, the last living of his family, eking by a cold living by himself outside of a city that wouldn't care for him. He was on the edge of dementia, and had trouble recalling if he had invited Bastion over or not. He gave the youth refuge for a short time in exchange for his company, until one evening, as the man flew into a senile rage over a perceived slight, Bastion fled again, hiding in the small barn. It was here he saw the bandits coming again. He ran. He saw plumes of smoke the next morning.
 
Cold and alone, Bastion headed for the city, Dunekeep, the wanton debauchery of the Marbled Bay he had long heard about. Making his way into the city, he quickly slipped into the crowds, rekindling his petty thievery immediately. He slept, free in many ways for the first time, in an alley outside a tavern.
 
After some weeks of moving from alley to alley and avoiding conflicts with the locals, Bastion was taken under the wing of Akta Anakis, an older human woman Bastion attempted to steal from. Akta, a grifter with an eye for talent, taught the young Tiefling everything she knew, seeking to use Bastion and some other young criminals to her advantage in a shrewd political game. Though Bastion was aware he was being used by her, he became close to Akta, in his own way. He entertained for a time that through her tutelage, he might find a semblance of peace, of comfort, or even of family. She was later killed.
 
Bastion, alone again in the world, struck out to build his own fortune. After a series of increasingly risky cons, he wound up in prison, subsequently escaped, was recaptured, and escaped again, earning a reputation throughout the city as a competent, if reckless, thief.
 
On the streets again one night, Bastion overheard the murder of a nearby barkeep. Seeking to ply the information for coin, the Tiefling became embroiled in a political scandal he never could have anticipated. After narrowly avoiding being framed for the murder he witnessed, Bastion took action. He took on the name of his one time mentor, and, as Akta Anakis reborn, he sought revenge against the dark forces of Cetan's political elite.
