When Aftran returned from the Goblin Wars of the year 10051 a hero, he was overjoyed to find himself the father of a healthy son. He named the child Rog, after the warrior of legend who led a charge beyond the cities walls, when Ravnica was assailed by dragons and goblins and other devilish devices none there had seen before. The child grew swiftly, and it could be seen that he would come after his father: A tall and broad man with fierce dark hair. Yet his eyes were those of his mother, calm and grey.

When the boy was eight, he would often be taken to the training grounds for early swordplay, where he marvelled at his fathers prowess and skill with all the weapons he laid his hands on: In full strength, the Hero of Ravnica could not be bested even by three men at once.

Yet as he grew older, Rog found his father become proud and harsh, and the rare occasions he showed kindness seemed to cease altogether. He began to lose sparring matches, and was ungratious about it, and finally was removed from the active service and given an honorary position and the task of training the newer generations.

So it was that Rog went less and less often to Sunhome, and when the time came to choose his own path in life he thwarted his fathers hopes and took up study in Prism University. His efforts were dedicated from then on to the human condition, and he sought ever for ways to make unnecessary the military, which he perceived to have ruined his father.

Rog moved through the unruly crowd that had assembled in front of the campus gates. They were held back by Boros Legionaries, who did a poor job at calming the rabble. Upon showing his student's insignia, the guards waved him through, expressing very clearly in their tone of voice the disdain they held for the students they guarded. One of them, an aristocrat with his head so high it nearly came off on its own, had been tripped by the careless placement of a market vendors crate or something similarly trivial and challenged the poor sod to a duel. From what Rog had heard, he had skewered him with the first strike, as the merchant had had no training in combat and the aristokrat was taught fencing from a young age. The swine had been hiding on campus ever since, and every day there were more voices calling for justice.

Some time later that day, the commotion became even greater, the shouts more angry. Rog saw two Legionaires walking down the hallway and decided to follow them, in case they were up to no good. They stopped in front of a door, and one of them, an angel, hammered on it and commanded it open. The hatch was pulled back and Rog heard someone on the inside asking what was going on. The angel declared: "The master of these rooms has been found guilty of reckless behaviour resulting in the death of a citizen, and is to be tried before the senate!" The hatch snapped shut again. The angel made a sign to the other officer, a Loxodon, and he began beating on the door. Rog could hear it splinter.
Then he saw something from the corner of his eye: a movement in a bend of the hall, just a few feet from him. There was a student armed with a crossbow, aiming at the Legionaires! The anger which had built within Rog for the last few days finally broke through. Here were two men persuing justice, and these fiends sought to kill them, too - which would likely begin a real riot, if Rog read the crowd at the gates right! He sprang from the doorway in which he had concealed himself and charged at the marksman. The man saw him, and fired. The bolt embedded itself in the ceiling, and the hallway rang. Rog barreled into the other man and took him to the ground, wrested the crossbow from him - and was kicked in the face. The man had not been alone! He landed on his back and rolled on the floor to avoid the worst kicks. Then, luckily, the Legionaires arrived and the students fled, except for the would-be assassin and one other whom they seized.

The angel bowed down to Rog, helped him up and said: "That was some gut you showed there, boy. Stupid, but brave. Why'd you do that?" "I - I didn't really think about it. I was just so angry. They were willing to start a civil war so that bastard wouldn't lose face!" The angel smiled. "You know, I think you'd make a good officer. We need men like you." Rog was taken aback. His image of the Legion was being quite turned upside down. "I don't know... I had always felt the Legionaires were after nothing but their own glory, and held all others in contempt because they were the ones risking their lives keeping the city safe. But I may have been wrong, and the job you do is important. I need to think about this." The angel patted him on the shoulder. "You do that, and if you want to sign up, ask for Balthial. I'll see to it that you join my corps. I do rather pride myself on the fine body of men!" He grinned, saluted smartly but not entirely sincerely, and walked his prisoners away.
