What is there to learn about this Rogue?
As her mother Sylara Onisogo was a nobnlewoman, Vaelin had everything she could ever want: Wealth, beauty, education, and influence. But she also had a restless spirit, a curious mind, and a rebellious streak. She hated the rules and restrictions of her high society life, and longed for adventure and freedom.
Vaelin perhaps inherited all these unruly traits from her father. He was barely present during her childhood, only visited her from time to time and seemed to care little about the family's interests.
The time he spent with Vaelin was short but intense ... he told her stories of the Ravenlands, encouraged Vaelin to go her own way and to put her own interests above morality and law.
Getting older she started to sneak out of her mansion at night, exploring the nearby village and Mansions, the ruin city of Falender and its secrets. She learned how to pick locks, climb walls, and evade guards. She made contacts with the underworld, and became fascinated by the stories of thieves, assassins, and spies. She decided to become one of them, and adopted the alias of "Aya Stelf".
She soon proved herself to be a skilled and daring rogue, taking on missions that others would not dare. She stole from the rich and powerful, infiltrated enemy strongholds, and sabotaged their plans. She enjoyed the thrill and challenge of her new life, and cared little for the consequences.
She kept her identity a secret from everyone, even her fellow rogues. She trusted no one, and worked alone. She avoided forming any attachments, and preferred to keep to herself. She was a lone wolf, and liked it that way.
But her double life could not last forever. One day, she was caught in the act of stealing a priceless artifact from a rival noble. She managed to escape, but not before being recognized by one of the guards. Her secret was exposed, and her mother was furious. She disowned her, and cut off all ties with her.
She was now a fugitive, hunted by both the law and her own mother. She had to leave the city, and find a new place to hide. She had no friends, no allies, no home. She had only her skills, her wits, and her shadow.
As she was captured by Bounty Hunter in 1164 AS the group of adventurers got aware of her in Grindbone. As they met her they assumed she would be ... or at least have a connection to Merigall ... because of her bright yellow eyes.
Exchanging stories and informations ... many questions arose in Vaelin's mind, as the stories of the adventurers seemed quite absurd to her ... and yet some peculiarities about her father seemed to fit.
She often wondered whether her mother had disowned Vaelin because her father had left Sylara behind, whether she was an unwanted child or whether political events had led to this. Perhaps it was just her lack of magical talent.
