Appearance

Physical Description

Standing at 6 foot 3 inches, Varren is both tall and muscular, resulting in an imposing physical presence. While his life over the last 10 years has been comfortable, Varren is hard-working and takes pride in his appearance and so remains close to peak physical condition.

Body Features

Varren wears his black hair in a long ponytail, although his advancing years have resulted in greying occurring around the temples and throughout his eyebrows and beard.

Apparel & Accessories

He commonly wears simple clothing: a pale linen shirt, a pair hard-wearing trousers and sturdy boots.
 
In combat he wears a suit of old (and slightly rusty) laminar armour he recently acquired off a trader passing through his village. This comes with greaves, sabatons and a Corinthian-style helmet.
 
He wields an unornamented greatsword with a V-shaped guard with quatrefoil terminations and an extended ricasso that has clearly seen more care and attention than his armour. He also owns a shortbow for hunting, and a shortsword and a pair of daggers, which he wears as part of his daily attire when in public, leaving the greatsword at home.

Special abilities

As a paladin he possesses the ability to heal wounds and cure poison and disease just through a simple touch. He also possesses basic spellcasting allowing him to cast a small number of Abjuration, Divination and Enchantment spells a few times per day.
He is also capable of channeling this magical energy into empowering his melee attacks and can detect and turn fiends and undead.

Mentality

Education

Varren's primary education has come in later life. While he was taught to read and write at a young age his family needed him to help with the farm. At the age of 18 he decided to join the Chirin Guard, receiving training in weapons, armour and combat tactics.
Since leaving Chirin he has received a wider education from whatever books were owned by the village's church or were carried by passing traders.

Employment

Formerly a member of the Chirin Outer Guard. He served one term, during which he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and given command of a small patrol unit. Varren left the Outer Guard (and Chirin) at the end of his term of service.
He has spent the last 15 years living in a small fishing village just off the Lorin-Chirin road on the northern coast of the Sheltered Sea. For the last five years he has served as the village's spiritual leader after the local priest of Seyr died of old age.

Mental Trauma

Varren is a long-term sufferer of PTSD and former alchoholic following the destruction of his unit by a monster while on patrol. Years of peaceful living in a small village with a compassionate wife has diminished the effects somewhat but he still has nightmares of the creature.
