Family: Woodsworth’s parent was the chieftain of the clan who was naturally skilled at Druidic magic. Woodsworth knew never to ask what happened to his mother. It seemed to be a point of contention in the clan. The last thing he remembers of his mother was holding her hand as they trekked to the firbolg gathering of the clans. His older sister was married into another clan about three years back. They don’t often have contact.
-Parent (Chieftain): Oakley – They/them – There has never been a chief of a clan that is as passionate about the protection of the forest of the firbolg. Oakley drew their druidic magic from the forest itself and was the most skilled with the magic of the woods across all firbolg clans. This is why Oakley’s clan was entrusted with protecting the border of the forest from races that lived in disharmony of the forest. Oakley is famously known for his famine fasts during the droughts. Oakley was never seen without an animal of the forest at their side. This is the legacy that was passed down to Woodsworth through the naming process. He is supposed to worthy enough to wield the magic of the forest just like Oakley. Oakley sadly did not survive the attack. With his death, the mantle of clan chief was passed onto Woodsworth. It was hard on Woodsworth to lose the person that he was closest with.
-Mother: Elmalee – She/Her – Woodsworth knows very little about his mother. All he has heard that she was the most devoted to her sacred duty of protecting the forest. While Woodsworth has heard a lot of rumors about what happened to his mother. The most discussed ones are that she was killed in the line of duty by humans trying to attack firbolg kind at their gather or that she was banished for an unforgiveable crime.
-Sister: Ivy – She/her – has no natural talent for druidic magic and was deemed unfit for leading the clan once her brother showed for natural talent for it. This is because Woodsworth’s clan believed that those who have a natural connection with the forest are deemed for greatness. She is known for her talent of medical knowledge and her ability to deceive evil humans into abandoning their gluttonous tendencies. She has a tactical mind that often allows her to avoid actually socially interacting with the enemies of the land.
Clan: Know as the Heartwoods. Woodsworth’s clan has been small since he was little. There were only five other members. Woodsworth believes that all have been killed in the attack on the clan’s camp.
Government: Decisions in the clan were decided through a democratic process in which clan members place their voting stones in a circle drawn on the ground if they agreed with the motion or outside of the circle if they disagreed. At the age of 14, the heartwoods allow the youth to carve their first voting stone and are allowed to have a vote in their democratic process.
Heartwoods Firbolg Code: Actions prove who you are, the clan’s needs come first, Treat others as equals, Fight for the balance, Truth is the only way.
Note: This is the only thing that Woodsworth has left of his clan other than his voting stone. This is the oath that Woodsworth took as a part of the voting stone carving ceremony.
Members:
-Clan Elder: Gale – she/her – this is the elder that gave Woodsworth his name. Woodsworth learned his knowledge of nature from her during his childhood. She often needed to gather medical herbs in order to fill the role of shaman of the village after Elmalee died and dragged Woodsworth along. Gale is also responsible of teaching the youth the ways of the clan.
-Clan Strategist: Meadow – she/her – This sassy lass is known for her strength and cunning. As the childhood best friend of Ivy, she learned the tricks of the scaring dishonest humans with Ivy from Elmalee. Meadow often went on missions with Oakley to work as a two person team in order to deceive wretched humans from the forest.
-Clan Fighter: Hal – He/Him – Hal is know for his brute strength, but not his intelligence. Hal is not his real name, but a shorten version of hallow. He gained this nickname for his absentminded behavior. Ironically, he is the most caring person in the clan. He only uses violence whenever deception and trickery do not work to restore the harmony of the forest. Otherwise, he spends his days taking care of injured forest creatures.
-Clan Animal Handler: Red – they/them – Red has always had the talent of talking with animals. This has come in handy due to the fact that she uses animals for recon missions to figure out if groups of humans are hostile to the balance of the forest. Red also uses the animals in order to be the most efficient gatherer of the clan. Red also was the first to know if something bad is happening to the forest. She was the only one who knew of the dark magic corruption. Red only knew seconds before the attack, but she died before she could warn everyone else.
-Clan Tracker and Hunter: Barkley - She/Her – Barkley is the only other person in the Woodsworth generation that has some druidic abilities. Sadly, she could only use the ability to wild shape and not cast spells. She used this ability to turn into a wolf in order to hunt for the heartwoods. She also used her wolf form to smell out humans who had entered the forest. She also was sent ahead to scout new areas for camp when they had to move to a new location along with red’s animals.
The Attack:
Both Barkley and Woodsworth were assigned to be a part of a team person team that surveilled a logger camp in order to signal the others to come and attack. These humans refused to leave even after the heartwoods redirected their water source for their mill and had coordinated multiple animal attacks on the camp. Unfortunately, Woodsworth had just gotten into a fight with Oakley about the source of his druidic magic. Oakley was deeply saddened to figure out that their son did not inherit his magic from the forest as the elder had predicted. Woodsworth wanted nothing more than to prove himself to his parent once more.
With selfish intention, Woodsworth used his ability to disappear into his surroundings in order to give the signal all by himself. To Woodsworth’s dismay, Barkley was able to track him and they fought in the woods about his selfish intentions. Eventually, Barkley got mad and stormed back to the camp, but promised Woodsworth that he could give the signal. Woodsworth wild shaped into a wolf and ran to the camp.
The sight that we saw was horrid. There was blood everywhere. The loggers were ripped apart and strewn across the ground. Horrified, Woodsworth went to check for any survivors. That’s when he heard Red scream. When he got back to the clan’s camp, he was greeted by the same image as the logging camp. His clan was so dismembered that he couldn’t identify any of them or if anyone had survived the massacre. There was just so much blood. And that’s when he saw the creature.
Creature, or rather multitude of creatures for it was the most unlikely of culprits. Dozens of squirrels their eyes in a maddened haze of red, dispersed from a larger mass back into the wilderness. This sight however was not what truly stuck but it was the haunting melody that played in the distance a cloaked figure slowly fading away into the tree line. The clan has had its share of encounters with twisted creatures from the darker regions of the forest, but this was an act of darkness unencountered to this day, as if a malevolent force had possessed nature itself into a fit of rage. When the scene was cleared and time was provided for the carnage to be investigated, one thing of note stuck out. An inscription scratched into a tree near the center of camp: Lathicrow.
Woodsworth broke down in the center of the encampment. There were no traces of anyone who survived. Woodsworth tears fell upon the bloodstained earth. That night, Woodsworth made an oath that he would find the cloaked figure and make them pay for what they did. It was his fault that they were able to be ambushed, but he would bring justice to his fallen clan. Woodworth anger slowly grew as he carved the names of the fallen in that very grove.
Woodsworth took a deep breath as he finished the last name: his parent’s. He threw his knife into the roots of the great oak and turned around. He never looked back as he walked away from the site. He promised he would come back only when their murder was found.
It was a week before he ran into another living soul. To Woodsworth’s dismay, it was a human. In a fit of rage, Woodworth slammed this man into a tree by the throat. Woodworth questioned the man and figured out that reports of a pipped piper where coming from a human settlement. The man forfeited the information on how to get to the city in exchange for the freedom from Woodsworth’s grip.
He hadn’t left the forest before, but he had heard of the atrocities of that was human settlements. Places where they drain the resources from the surrounding area and the earth slowly dies around them. Woodworth saw this was true when they first laid eyes on the city of Hannenburg. Yet, there was something strange going outside the city.
It would turn out to be the Vistani Carnival. Woodsworth noticed how this group of humans used tents instead of fixed structures and to seem to have no ties to the land. Woodworth would later find out that these individuals who ran the carnival were nomads like Woodsworth. On later reflection, Woodsworth would blame this as the reason he fell into this crowd.
Another major reason was his friendship with Marius. Its quite funny how they originally meet. Woodsworth would use shapeshifting to fly around the camp to listen to the human’s gossip about this pipped piper. Woodsworth learned that there has been indeed spotting of this cloaked figure who plays a pipe. Marius was the only person to notice that the hawk that Woodsworth had wildshaped into didn’t belong in the region.
Marius started to try to feed this bird to try and capture it to release it to the woods where Woodsworth was from. Marius was able to trap Woodsworth in a wooden bird cage. Ironically, that cage didn’t hold Woodsworth when he turned back into a 7-foot firbolg. Marius laughed at this giant who now sat in the remains of the bird cage.
Marius thought it was awesome that Woodsworth could shapeshift and allowed Woodsworth to stay with him as long as he would help Marius with performances. Woodsworth took the deal out of starvation. Marius acted as an animal tamer and Woodsworth would act like any frightening beast that he could wild shape into. This is how Woodsworth became familiar with Vistani culture and made a new best friend.
Distrusts: Humans and Giants. Humans because of their greed and gluttony which disturbs the equilibrium of the forest and Giants who think they are above other intellectual creature. Also, has a distrust of squirrels since they murdered his family.
Worst Fear: Being banished from firbolg society for acting selfishly in the moments before the attack that lead to the perceived death of his clan. He should have been with them to help them fight, maybe then they would have survived.
Life Goal: To protect and restore nature at all costs in order to restore his oath to his clan in order to redeem himself.
Strengths: He has developed critical thinking skills in which he looks at less harmful solutions than violence. He also has brute strength on his side and learned many different skills of from his clan. His passion is infectious and allows him to continue under such overwhelming circumstances.
Weaknesses: He is displacing his anger upon the corruption and can become blindsided by the rage that overtakes him because of the blame he places on himself and the dark magic that has gone unchecked. He can often have extreme trouble deviating from the morals instilled in him from the heartwood clan code. This naturally means that my character cannot lie.
