Born in the 36th year since the start of the Etherien Republic, Arviel's childhood was in a time of chaos. She was born in the Waterfal City, Amphys, a place in the north of Old Etherien, where the Etherien Republic is based. She remembers little of her parents, apart from the fact that she was taken away from them at a young age. Realmguard Mattheo Bonnomay, who had come to power in the city not long before her birth, had decreed that all tieflings be moved outside the main city walls. Because her family was quite well-off, they were forced to leave their nice house in the center and move outside. In the chaos, she lost them - and a guard took her with him with a lot of tiefling orphans, despite her begging him that her parents were still in the city. She was only 5 at the time.
She arrived in the northern city of Veylan, famous for it's Kelp Downs, an area by the riverside filled with crime and poverty. She lived in the orphanage for a while, fitting in amongst the other tieflings, but things were tough for her. She had to find a way to get people to do what she wanted them to, or she wouldn't get anything from life. So she started to use her natural talents in flattery and trickery to manipulate those around her, quickly finding herself in a better position than her peers. Soon, the Green Dagger Guild took interest in her abilites, and she was taken from the orphanage one night, when she was thirteen. Her years with the green daggers were tough, but she considers them enjoyable enough. She had friends, albeit only temporary ones, because people tend to disappear often in Veylan.
She started to use her abilities to get back at the bureaucratic nobles that had messed with her so often, and reveled in ruining them just like her parents had been ruined. She once tried to travel back to Amphys, but her searches proved fruitless - she didn't even remember their names. After continuing her training, and her playing, and her tricking, Avriel proved herself to be quite a skilled rogue.
However, one night, when Avriel was 26 years of age, her luck ran out. The noblewoman she was impersonating, Seiribis Vellaia, proved to be too high of a target. She managed to steal every last expensive item in the house were she and her elven husband (Akkar Vellaia), but soon after the guild hall was overrun with guards sent by the Dawn Legion. She escaped, terrified of Akkar, who searched for her with a passionate vengeance - he threw a lightning bolt at her that shattered one of her horns.
She started to leave, still bearing the visage of Seiribis Vellaia, and tried to find her way to a better place. First, however, she wanted to lay low in an inconspicuous village for a while, and the faraway Oar's Rest seemed perfect for that. She jumped on the back of a travelling merchant's caravan and travelled with them to the small town, days removed from any other settlement.
Arriving early in the morning hours, Arveil was delighted to see the first snowfall of the year fall around her. She approaches the town now, watching a pair of children play in the slushy snow and what looks like a lake as flat as a mirror. Life could be calm here, she thinks. At that moment, something unexpected happens....
