Last week, I did something that I regret.
Heh, I see your reaction. "Sonic did something he regretted? No way!"
Yes, way.
Me and Tails were following a lead that Silver had picked up. Something about an entity going about the world and vandalizing structures? It all seemed a bit crazy, but then again, compared to other things we've seen, it's gotta be real tame. But, whatever. We're Team Sonic, and we're in charge of the world's safety. So, me and that irresistible fox of mine loaded our stuff into the Tornado and headed out to the reported location. It was in northern Mobitania, nestled in some mountain range. We were skeptical at first.
"This is it? Looks like an abandoned mansion to me," he told me.
I shrugged and kept looking at it. I dunno, but something about that mansion was just mesmerizing. Was it the size? Was it the architecture? Who knows, but it just seemed to drag me in.
Tails landed the plane not too far from the building. As soon as we exited the plane, hundreds of guys with swords just popped up outta nowhere! We were surrounded. I didn't know what to do. So far, things weren't going too well. Those guys sure seemed full of...bloodlust. Suddenly, the group split up the middle, and a person came through. He seemed to be their leader. And to make things worse, he was a hedgehog. Just like me. This could get nasty. His fur and quills were a completely unnatural color. It was purple. Indigo, maybe? Going from his eyebrow ridges all the way to the back of his upper spine were two vertical white lines. The weirdest of all was the fact that his eyes were completely white. There were no pupils, no irises, nothing. Just a white sclera. This guy wore a sick looking cloak and he held some sort of staff in his hand. Needless to say, I was creeped out.
"Welcome to the Darkspine Palace, newcomers. I apologize for the disturbance. These brave men here are all loyal to me, till the day they die. I...am the great deity known as Darkspine. And I sense in you, blue hedgehog, a power that can be very useful to me. Come now. We have a lot to discuss."
The men pushed us forward, five of them behind, two on each side, and one in the front. They all had their swords in their hands.
"Dear me, why don't you lot get rid of the swords? Remember, we're not going to eliminate these ones. They're special."
Darkspine led me and Tails into his house, and I won't lie, I was impressed. It had an ornate interior, with hand-carved patterns decorated on the stair railings. All around the mansion, several of his followers were working. Some sweeping, others cooking, and others hammering away at some construction project.
"So, uh, Darkspine? You said you sensed a useful power in Sonic. What's that all about?" Tails asked the strange-looking deity. He was probing for more information. Little did anyone but me and him know, but he had a recording device in his pocket, which had been activated ever since we landed.
"Ah, young fox. I was waiting for you to ask me that. Hehe...the power in your friend is very desirable for my cause. He has had large amounts of rage, hatred, and sadness coursing through him at one time or another, and I require a person with exactly those feelings. I cannot fully understand what it was that he experienced, but no doubt it filled you with burning emotion, did it not?" he asked me.
I nodded.
"Good. In any case, here is my throne room. Guards, you may leave us." Darkspine said. His people sheathed their swords and walked off.
Darkspine sat on his throne, with one leg resting on the other.
"You may be wondering why I've brought you two here. Rest assured, I will not kill you. In fact, you are here to be reborn. Have you heard of the World Rings?" he asked.
That piqued my interest. In case you don't know, collecting Rings is my specialty.
"World Rings? Never heard of 'em." I told him.
Darkspine smiled sinisterly.
"From what I know of you, this information will be very interesting indeed. The World Rings are seven magical rings that bind this world together. They each have a color; yellow, green, red, dark blue, cyan, purple, and white. Each of these colors corresponds with a specific emotion. Dark blue is Hope, Purple is sadness, Red is rage, Green is hatred, Yellow is joy, Cyan is pleasure, and White is Desire. When collected together, the user will be able to wield immense power. However, that is not my desire. You see, when I was chosen to become the Darkspine, over one hundred years ago, there was a ritual that had to be performed in order for the previous Darkspine's power to be transferred to me. And that is what I plan to do today. You, my spiky friend, will become the next Darkspine! I will not wait until I'm on my deathbed to get an heir. It starts here and now!" Darkspine concluded.
He snapped his fingers in the air, and a woman hurried forward with a briefcase in her hand. He grabbed it and popped the lid open. There the World Rings sat, nestled in their own circle-shaped nooks. He extracted three of them; Red, Green, and Purple.
"These are the World Rings of Rage, Hatred, and Sadness. All of which you possess in massive amounts! Come forth and accept your position amongst the gods!" The Darkspine beckoned.
"No thanks! I've already got people I need to look after. I'm one of Mobius's saviors after all! I'm needed in the world! Besides, I already have a lifelong commitment I need to keep." I looked at Tails, whose muzzle immediately turned red.
Darkspine's blank eyes twisted into a sort of quizzical expression.
"You're denying the offer? But no one in history has ever denied a Darkspine! Do you know what kind of power you are throwing away? You'll be wise to reconsider this!"
I waved a hand at him.
"I said, 'no thanks'. I don't want your power, I don't want your godhood. What I do want is the exit to this place. Tails and I have places to be; the rest of the team would be worried about us!"
Darkspine smiled a twisted, maniacal smile.
"That is a mistake that you won't live to regret! Guards, bring him to me!"
Darkspine's armed guards grabbed hold of my arms and dragged me towards the angry deity's throne. He stood up, with the three World Rings all in his hand.
"Now then, if you want your friend over there to live, you'll extend your hand. Right now, if you would."
I looked behind me, and more guards had come and seized Tails' arms. He didn't even have enough time to pull out a weapon.
"No! Let go of him! He's innocent! It's me you want!" I extended my hand to Darkspine.
He smiled sinisterly and grabbed my hand.
He began to recite some sort of chant.
"Make-believes, reborn! Myths in mind re-thought! Question all that's known! Legends blurred and torn! Seven rings in hand! I hereby grant Sonic the Hedgehog the power of Darkspine!"
Each of the World Rings began to shine brightly. He put the Red Ring on my pointer finger.
Immediately, a surge of pain rippled through my body. Then, I got irrationally angry. I saw red in my eyes, and my teeth clenched. I yelled loudly, my voice echoing in all the mansions rooms and hallways. Then, the Green Ring was applied. I instantly felt more pain and enormous hatred towards the Darkspine. A thought crossed my mind, that hadn't appeared in years. Could I kill him if I got the chance? Finally, the Purple Ring was placed onto my ring finger, and I was filled with intense sadness. Tears welled up in my eyes. I looked at Tails, who stood there with a look of horror on his face. I didn't want him to see me like this.
Finally, the transformation began. A line of purple snaked up my arms and onto my head. My quills turned that same color, and the forward-most two drooped lower than usual. Two white lines appeared on my forehead, going from right above my eyes to the back of my top quill. My shoes ripped apart, as my feet were revealed. They were completely purple, and long sharp claws grew out of each toe. Tails called out my name, but I could barely hear him. Right before the transformation was complete, I managed to squeak out a few more words to my bel0ved fox buddy.
"T-Tails! Look at me! It'll be...alright..."
My voice grew much gruffer sounding.
"Tails! Listen to me. I love you so much! Never forget!"
And with that, the last of my body turned that sickening shade of purple, and I was fully converted. The last thing I remember hearing was the Darkspine cackling.
Afterwards, I must've blacked out, because I woke up in a cage, suspended over the ground. My fur was still purple, so it was apparent that that whole ordeal wasn't a dream.
"Ugh, where am I? Why's my head hurt?"
I held the side of my head; it hurt badly.
Suddenly, a thought came back to me.
"Tails! I need to get to him! I'm coming, buddy!"
I spin dashed the bars of the cage. They gave way pretty easily. I carefully dropped down to the floor. My bare feet barely made a sound. The marble tiles were cold against my paw pads.
I looked around. I seemed to be inside some sort of basement.
"How can I get outta here without alerting that purple creep or his men? Think, Sonic! Think!"
I kept surveying the surroundings and eventually found a vent. It was dark inside it, but hopefully, it led to freedom. I crouched on all fours and spin dashed into the grate. It caved in and I began my trip through the vent system. It was a confusing five minutes, but I found another room! It looked like a kitchen. I popped out of the vent, but the grate clattered to the floor.
Drat.
I stayed next to the wall for a bit, but no guards arrived. Carefully, I left the kitchen and poked my head into the hallway. Nobody to be found. But, I did hear sharp cracks and the sound of yelling.
It was Tails.
"Is that you? It's gotta be! Hold on!"
I sped down the hallway, leaving an orange and purple trail. I slammed into the door where the sound was coming from, and it collapsed inwards. I saw one of Darkspine's guards torturing Tails with a whip, all the while Darkspine stood back and watched with glee.
"You! I thought you were thoroughly taken care of! How'd you escape?" he asked.
I growled loudly.
"That is none of your concern. Let me ask you this. How are you gonna escape me? Remember, you gave me this power. So let's give you a taste of your own medicine!"
I dashed towards the pole that Tails was tied to and undid the ropes. His body dropped to the floor, but he managed to heave himself up.
"Thank you, Sonic. These people...they're ruthless. You'd better stay on your guard," he told me.
I nodded.
"No problem. Say, d'ya think you can contact the rest of the team and tell 'em what's up?"
He put a thumbs up and hurried out of the room.
Darkspine raised his hand and a bright ball of light formed in his hand.
I ran in front of him and grabbed his hand.
"Oh no, you don't. I'm gonna make you pay for what you did to him. Your godship ends today!"
I kneed him in the stomach, which sent him crashing into a table.
"Oh, you think you can get away with this? I gave you this power, and I can take it back!"
He lunged at me, trying to grab my arm, but I dodged with plenty of room to spare.
"You can take my power away, if you can catch me, that is."
I ran around him in circles. He swiped at me, each hit missing by miles. Then, I began to strike back. A punch here, a few kicks there. He was overwhelmed. Blood dripped out of the corners of his mouth, and his arm was injured.
I went in for the final blow. With my fist outstretched, I ran towards him at breakneck speed.
"Speed Break!" I yelled.
My fist made contact with the Darkspine's soft abdomen flesh, and he was sent flying backward. He struck the wall behind him and slumped over.
"Well, isn't this embarrassing. The student has beaten the teacher, so to speak. I didn't exactly see my day going quite like this. But, it is what it is. Now then, I'm gonna put you out of your misery!"
My muscles tensed up as I curled into a ball and charged a super-powered spindash. I was about to put Darkspine down, before Tails burst into the room.
"Sonic, wait! Don't do this! It's not like you to kill! We can go back home right now! You and me!" He said.
I stopped charging the spin dash and looked at the desecrated Darkspine. He was bleeding from multiple wounds and his eyes were barely open.
"Y-you heard him. It's not like you to k-kill. Huhahahaha!!" he laughed.
"That's right. I don't kill. But I'll do you a solid and let you sleep for a few days."
Darkspine raised a finger, presumably to ask what I meant, but it was already too late. My leg lashed out at the side of his head, and he was out.
I walked over to my best friend and wrapped my arm around his shoulder.
"Thanks for that. I was about to do something I'd regret. Let's go home."
He smiled.
"The pleasure's mine. By the way, purple looks good on you."
He kissed me on the nose, and every worker in Darkspine Palace bowed to me as we left the house. We got onboard the Tornado and flew back home, where we could finally figure out how to get me back to normal.
