Backstory

by Gabbi

Gabbi is a nickname that she uses with creatures that speak common. Most Grippli names can’t easily be pronounced in the common tongue. Gripppli who pick nicknames to use in common choose names that describe them. Gabbi has always enjoyed meeting new people and telling stories so she picked a name related to talking.

Her Grippli tribe is somewhat nomadic, moving with the seasons so that they can always catch their favorite prey of fish and bugs. They worship a rainbow skinned grippli goddess. Most other races believe it isn’t really a god but a forest spirit. They are led by a Tribe Mother who makes rulings on any decision that the tribe can’t agree on. They also have a shaman that is in charge of keeping the history or their tribe and providing guidance to their people. Grippli have no written language so this person is very important to the tribe. The shaman also learns the common tongue and takes care of most of the tribe's interactions with outsiders. The final test a shaman undergoes before taking their place in a tribe is to go out into the world and do some great good deed. The tribe believes the greater the deed the more powerful the shaman will be. There is one shaman per generation and they are picked by the Rainbow Goddess. She sends them dreams and blesses them with magical gifts when they are children. However during Gabbi’s generation 2 children dreamed of the rainbow goddess and have magic. Gabbi was one of these children and Charlian was the other. The tribe decided they would both be trained and sent on their final test. The one that does the greatest deed to help the world would become the shaman.

Like all in the tribe Gabbi learned a skill to help provide for the tribe. She took up fishing and excelled at it. Charlian learned to hunt and became much more competitive then Gabbi. Both Gabbi and Charlian were taught about their goddess as well as the snake and spider demons their people feared. As they learned to master their magic Charlian would play tricks on Gabbi and was constantly trying to one up Gabbi. As they got closer to leaving for their test it became clear he viewed Gabbi as a rival.
When learning common and how to deal with people outside the tribe Gabbi made good friends with a Tortle named Quott. Quott visited their tribe once a year to trade bright colored clothing that Gabbi’s people loved, in exchange for rare herbs, fish, and even bugs that can only be found in the deeper jungles where most city folk won’t go. As Gabbi ventured into the world alone for the first time to find a great deed to do and prove she is the chosen one of the rainbow goddess, she decided to start by visiting her friend. She hoped Quott could help her understand the outside world and find an adventuring group. Gabbi grew up hearing stories of adventures going out and saving the world. She figures if she joins a group and helps them she can save the world and what greater good deed can there be?
