No More Hope

by Hope

Hope repeats a similar process as before, disguising herself, going to disparate parts of the world to purchase a burner phone and USB device. Then she makes a video recording, again with a previously circulated photo being the only visual and uploads it to the hacker VPN social networks from a cybercafe in Singapore. Even if she no longer cares to hide herself, she can not even in her darkest moment, risk exposing others.

Her voice is deadpan in the video, there are no tears left in her. There is nothing left but a dark nihilism.

"I'm sorry... I just can't do it. I can't see how someone so stupid and careless as myself could possibly be the world's Hope. How could anyone ever trust me? How could I ever trust myself? Why would anyone ever think they could have faith in any of my actions?"

"I want to believe the best in people, but how can I go on if I know only the worst in myself? I have always believed in justice, but now, how can there be justice for me and what I have done?"

"Governments are mere puppets now of Dr Destroyer, their leaders thralls in his service. Supervillains are Dr Destroyer's enforcers, portrayed by the utterly corrupt media as "heroes".  The police don't even try to stop criminals. There is no justice to be had there. Villains run rampant in society and whereas I once thought I could do something to stop them..." There is a long pause, then in a weak voice, "I have learned that I am no better than them."

"There are others... Better than I. Put your hope in them. I have faith in them. But I have no more faith in myself. For me, there remains just one thing, one final measure of justice remaining. You won't see me again. I am sorry. I'm going to go test just how invulnerable I really am. There is no more hope for me."

Hope dons her costume one last time, then goes outside. She stares up at the sky, gathering what resolve remains. Then she takes off. In three seconds, there is a sonic boom. At the ten-second mark, she breaks atmosphere. She continues to build speed, doubling every two seconds. At forty seconds she reaches light speed and goes tachyonic. Fifteen seconds after that, in the heart of the sun, she drops out of tachyonic.
