Late in the afternoon Galatea, Pinjra, and myself, Engollion, arrived in May Creek, on a mission from Lady Morwen, the Duchess of Daggerford. We were tasked to take care of a small werewolf problem before it gets out of hand. Knowing very little of the situation, or even on werewolves, we decided to investigate the tavern first to see what we could discover. Pinjra buried himself immediately into his books (some young adult vampire fiction), while Galatea went off in search of the largest man she could find, while I was left to get some drinks.
We enjoyed a small moment of silence before Galatea came bounding back claiming to have met a sell sword who was also hired by the local town guard to look into the situation as well. She pointed out across the tavern a large balding man, adorned with heavy leather armour and furs covering his shoulders, polishing a sword almost as large as him. While not fully sure if he is competition or help, we decided to see what we can learn from him. Introducing himself as Gerhardt, he tells us what he knew of the situation and what he planned to do about it. He would wait for it to attack, and attack it first. He also listed of many other creatures he'd slain and why this one should be no different from the rest.
While not fully sold on his plan, we discussed the merits of a large man with a larger sword swinging it in front of us, and perhaps taking a the brunt of any attack. With that in mind, we thought we could easily slay the werewolf, get some reward for helping him, and then getting our reward from Lady Morwen. Galatea remained in the bar to try to convince Gerhardt to allow us to help him, while Pinjra and myself went to look at the barn on the edge of town that he said was where reports of howling were heard the last few nights.
A short trek led us to the barn where it was quite obvious that a larger creature had tried to claw through the side of it. This along with some tufts of hair, and pawprints around the edges of the barn leading into the woods made it quite obvious that some creature had done this, and may indeed return as they never made it into the barn, where some livestock were held.
We decided that this is where we would try to wait the beast out.
We returned with our findings to Galatea and Gerhardt, and he immediately set off from the tavern towards the barn. We set ourselves up hidden around, Pinjra behind the far wall of the barn, facing away from the woods, Gerhardt on the barn roof itself, Galatea on the roof of a smaller farmhouse just a few yards from the barn, and myself on a smaller shed nearby. We remained in our positions nearly 4 hours before we heard the sounds of running, and snarling coming from the town, and was followed by a large crash just nearby the shed. As soon as it came into view I loosed an arrow directly into eye of the creature as Galatea shouted from across the way, "It's here!" A large wolflike creature on all fours came running into the small clearing before the barn, but unlike a wolf, it seemed to rely heavily on its front paws to propel it forward, like a man clawing at the ground. Gerhardt immediately sprung into battle and roaring with laughter dove off the barn roof and dashed directly at the creature, while Pinjra revealing himself from around the corner lobbed a firebolt that landed just behind the creature. Galatea nimbly dove off the roof in an unnecessary display of acrobatics and ran towards the creature striking at it. Both Gerhardt and Galatea fought well together, and struck at the creature drawing blood, while Pinjra and myself volleyed arrows and firebolts to provide some cover. The creature lashed out at Gerhardt just as he launched Galatea into the air to strike down at it, and cleared his head right from his shoulders. I moved off the roof to place myself between Pinjra and the beast, and shot out a Guided Bolt to see if that would end the creature, but it moved too quickly. But luckily this movement was anticipated by Pinjra who launched a firebolt directly down the creatures maw causing it to explode from inside, showering Galatea with offal.
We collected the beasts head, and upon inspection, could very well have been a werewolf, as it was similar to a wolf, but still vaguely humanoid. Looking around to see if this was the only creature or if there were signs of more, we collected our belongings, and brought the beasts head to the guard, where we were paid in Gerhardt's stead. We burned his body as the guard were not willing to bury it due to some human superstition, and stayed the remainder of the night at the tavern. Galatea collected both the head of the beast and Gerhardt's sword as trophies and tried to find some sort of smith who could turn the skull into a helmet.
In the morning we returned to Daggerford, where Galatea ran off to find the first smith to work on her new helmet, while Pinjra and I were left to deal with Lady Morwen. We waited in the entry of her manor, where many other adventurers milled about and handed in contracts and bounties, and by the time it came to be announced into the chambers Galatea returned. We concisely summed up what happened the previous night, as well as showed the once trophy, now helmet to Lady Morwen. Impressed she paid us 5 gold each and told us more work would find us if we remained in town.
So we left to find some accommodation and waited to see what the future holds.
