A Letter to the dead

by Viessa Traleth

Dear Amaya,

It's been too long, you've missed so much in the past couple years. You'll be happy to know that Yumi is doing well. I can't believe I'm saying this, but your little sister has gotten married! We've been waiting so long and they were finally able to work up the courage to propose to their girlfriend. The wedding was beautiful. I wish you were there to see it.

With them off on their honeymoon, I've been left to focus on work… or at least attempt to. The military hurt some of our own even killed one, I saw them first-hand. All I could think about was you and it was only the start. We laid out a trap for a spy we learned of and it was going well, until Vesper was shot. She was just grazed but it was enough to send me out the window to chase the shooter down. That was the last thing I remembered before I was suddenly holding you again, trying to comfort you during your last breaths. Next thing I know, I'm standing in an alley with the others. Apparently I almost died trying to get him, but I have no memory of it. I didn't tell them that though, I intend to work through this on my own.

That's why I'm writing to you after all, it is strangely therapeutic. Maybe after long enough I'll be able to fire my own gun again. For now I'll just take comfort at the thought that you might see this in the afterlife.

With love, Mom
