Yesterday was even more bodyguard duty and it was about as eventful as the previous day. We got an update on our work from the old bodyguard, Richard. He’s an older man and clearly not suited for a bodyguard position anymore. No wonder Sebrezal didn’t feel safe when he's got this ancient relic watching over him. The job is simple, we guard Sebrezal’s carriage, survey his warehouses as he does business things, and then guard the carriage back. Simple and boring. This time around I’ll be paired with Therion, the young half-elf whose mechanical owlbear attacked us before.
The trip to the warehouse was uneventful and patrolling the warehouses even more uneventful. Sebrezal has some sort of shipment company that transports goods from north to south. All we saw were people working around the docks, nothing unusual or interesting. So far this job was a walk in the park. Or it was, until the ride back to the manor.
It all happened so suddenly but one second the street was full of people bustling about and the next it’s empty. Suddenly a cart rolled across the street quickly and overturned in front of the carriage. A woman stood up on the cart and told Sebrezal to exit the carriage, and when he didn’t, bandits and pirates attacked our party. Talk about making an entrance.
It was a tough fight and it didn’t look good for us in the beginning, with 6 against 10 or more bandits. But we managed to fight them off and protect our employer. I felt sort of useless though since I couldn’t fight back as well but it seemed like we were all a little caught off guard. After all the enemies were gone, we were joined by a lizard-looking fellow named Soloman, whom I certainly didn’t notice before. Everyone talked about the battle and it seems as if Lyrellia, Emelina, Quintella, and this Soloman have never fought, let alone killed anyone before in their lives. We all returned to the manor to rest after that.
Now I know there’s no sense in regretting bridges already crossed but after that fight, I don’t know if it was right to take the job. Maybe I should’ve waited for my contact after all. But it doesn’t matter, since I took the job and I'm getting paid and other than being attacked by bandits it’s going okay-ish. So it’s all fine. Right? But still, it’s the money I'm worried about. That's all I worry about these days. Maybe I could cut my contract short and find work elsewhere? But then again what are the odds I’ll even be able to find work in this town? Should I risk it? Probably not.
On another note, it seemed like a bit of a shock to Lyrellia, Emelina, Quintella, and Soloman when they realized they had fought and killed strangers. Their only solace seemed to be that they were attacked first so it was self-defense, but you could tell it didn’t sit well with them. Maybe it’s better they learn it now rather than later? It’s a rude wake-up call but hey, if they continued traveling they’d have to realize it eventually. It’s hard going anywhere without running into a little trouble that involves some sort of bodily harm. Sometimes, no matter how you try to avoid it, someone is going to get hurt and sometimes it’s better if it’s not you. I know I could probably be more sympathetic to these young new travelers but thinking things can be solved with kind words is wishful thinking.
