Not a City Gal Anymore WIP

by Cass Silverbloom

My dearest Truth,
I have compiled a collection of diary entries below to give to you whenever you come back to me. I don't know if I'm wasting my time looking for you here and I just hope you'll forgive me if I am. I honestly didn't know where else to turn and the worm in my brain isn't keen to offer guidance either. God this is all so messy.

One step off that damned ship and I knew I wasn't in my element. The wide open horizon and infinite directions was intimidating, but I didn't exactly have time to wallow in my situation. I was shoved together with 4 other misfits and sent on my merry way. It's funny, really, how all your training goes out the window when your environment changes. I barely got a motive from any of the others as we travelled. Ivy is a wayward druid trying to find her way in the world. I kinda envy how free she is. Aurelia seems to be out here to grapple with some, shall we say personal issues, as well as to earn coin. A respectable enough endeavour. Theodora appears to be travelling to fulfil her role in a prophesy from her people and, even if she won't admit it to herself, to cure herself from chronic self-consciousness. Curious, that one it. I'll have to keep an eye on if that prophesy manifests. And Wog, Wog is special. It's strange, really, how the two of us can share a thirst of knowledge and basically nothing else.

Regardless, we set out from the outpost aimless and unprepared. Well, I was unprepared. Who knew you'd need rations in an un-inhabited wilderness. After a bit of travel things were looking up when a deer crossed my sights, but I guess I was too eager as when Ivy went to lower my crossbow, a huge beast snatched the doe from in front of us and made off. A manticore, it was called. Apparently. Going to have to chalk that knowledge up to You Know Who. (But seriously, I'm going to have to research those things). I guess I should trust people with nature magic about nature from now on - who knows what would have happened if that thing got its prey snatched from right under it. Plus she did create much needed food in the form of Goodberries, so I guess she's onto something.

As we bedded down for the night, I took the time to pull Rat from the ether. I wasn't exactly happy with his form, but I guess an owl *is* more useful out here for the moment. Still doesn't feel right creating life from that wretched book but I missed his company.

An early start for an eventful day. We decided to make our way quickly through the forest, using Rat as a guide (I guess some things never change). The little guy spotted a watering hole for us, and naturally we headed over in search of food, action or both. I can't say I was expecting to find a half drowned horse. Although it took the 5 of us and then some (rest in peace octopi, you truly were the best of us), the horse was free, dry, and being coddled by Ivy. It's charming to see how a bond can be so quickly formed. Berry was no sooner rescued than he was named and fed. I hope they manage to stay together.
