Soren wanted to be a heroic adventurer like in his childhood stories, but an illness took his mobility, and he entered bureaucracy instead.
A crime syndicate convinced him his talents were being wasted, and offered him not only a challenge, but paydays in gold, not silver. All without him getting his hands dirty.
Soren bought this story for a little too long. By the time he realized what horrid crimes he was enabling, he was in too deep to get out. He belonged to them now. He could get used to counting blood money, or the next expense in the ledger would be for his own hit.
... Or so they said. Stubbornness is a Kapranarien stereotype Soren willingly embraces, and shrewdness one he embodies. He will escape their clutches, and in time, make up for the harm he was party to.

Soren once dreamt of charging into battle with spear braced and horns forward, like the heroes whose stories he read of. Not long before he was ready to begin a military career, his aspirations were dashed by a disease that left him alive but unable to move without difficulty.
He resigned himself to a life of desk work, like his family wanted, and something he had a better knack for than he liked to admit. He had no love for it, until his bureaucratic work led him into a criminal underworld. Something with stakes and thrills. Something that rewarded him in gold, not silver.
For the last couple years, he has built connections and moved a vast amount of wealth between crime syndicates just out of the view of normal people. But the deeper he falls into that world, the closer he is pulled to the injustice and suffering his talents enable. His can't deny that his hands are dirty with his associates' work.
Still the pragmatist, he is trying to make a clean exit from his work, and mitigating whatever damage he can in the meantime. He has to escape in a way that will ensure they will not or cannot trace him, that he doesn't become just another casualty. The syndicate believes Soren's knowledge of their operations will make him a threat; not just to them, but to criminal groups across Nycos.
They are completely right.
Education
Although he aspired to a military career, Soren learned the ways of words and numbers at his family's insistence. He found a natural predisposition for such work, and he wasn't happy about it.
Employment
Soren is a bureaucrat offering services throughout the city of Florin, and a well-regarded one. But his primary clients operate in the city's underworld.
Mental Trauma
After an illness dashed his dreams of a more adventurous lifestyle, Soren still harbors grief over what could have been. This often manifests as envy of those "living the dream," as he sees it. He soothes his wounded pride by indignantly insisting against any physical assistance.
