Guide to the Generic Article template

Use the Generic Article template to write about anything that doesn't quite fit any of the other templates! The Generic Article template is a blank canvas for your writing, which you can use for content like RPG mechanics, mini-metas, primers, or simply very specific worldbuilding details that don't perfectly fit into another template.

What should I use this template for?

The Generic Article template can be used to write anything, it's a great place to put everything that doesn't fit the other templates! Here are some examples:

World introductions (a.k.a. primers)

While the world homepage is the door to your world, readers who want to know more will find a world introduction very useful. This is also known as a primer, and you can use it to briefly describe the most importants parts of your world and give links so that readers can learn more about specific topics. If you're worldbuilding for a game or a book, it's a great page to send to your players or readers!

RPG mechanics

If your world is an RPG setting with homebrew rules, you can use a Generic article to write them out. Then, send it to your players so that they have access to both rules and worldbuilding on the same place! Depending on how extensive your rules are, you could have them all in a single article or divided into multiple ones.

Meta content

Meta content is anything that's about the world but not part of the world. The meta document has its own section on World Anvil, but there are other kinds of meta content you can have:

  • Mini-meta: This is like the meta document, but for a specific area of your setting only. This can be useful if the book you're writing or the campaign you're preparing take place in a specific place of a wider setting.
  • Fan art: If your readers or players create art based on you world, you can show it off it in a Generic Article.
  • Indexes: Depending on how you organize your worldbuilding, it might be useful to create lists of articles organized by different criteria.
  • Monetization: If you're monetizing your world, a Generic Article can contain details about how to support you and the benefits of doing so.
