Additional Notes Part of Incom's attempts to capitalize on its U-wing investments (alongside the strictly civilian BT-45D variant), the UT-62LE enjoyed modest success with private law enforcement firms and planetary governments, although it failed to win the Empire's lucrative law enforcement speeder contract. Santhe/Rothana Heavy Engineering's incumbent LAAT-LE design won the trials held in 4BBY despite the '62LE's lower cost and obvious superiority in several areas. Imperial chiefs of staff officially found the Incom design too generalized, being a spacecraft and not tailored specifically for operations within a gravity well. (This amidst rumors of graft and a generalized bias against Incom's designs.)
The craft's aerospaceframe is unable to be converted back to that of a UT-60D due to its radically smaller stabilizers (S-foils), which also decreased the '62LE's handling. Its engines as well have been shrunk, Incom changing the large 4J.7 engines out for detuned versions of those used on their X-wing fighters. Many systems, from the robo-galleys and enviro-stores of life support to fuel systems to the navicomputer and the hyperdrives themselves, were simply removed, placarded "waste space" or "provisions." Shields and weaponry were similarly downgraded. The only upgrades the UT-62LE received were its sensor suite - to compete with the LAAT-LE - and its forward weapons mounts which were given limited mobility (arcs of fire L/R 20 degrees each, +10/-45 degrees vertical). Its cargo hold remains customizable but comes standard with provision for 6 lightly equipped ship's troops and 4 stasis fields for "detainees." It usually is supplied with SoroSuub door guns: long-range stun blasters with a shorter range "riot" area of effect mode. These combined with the stasis fields and the craft's smaller landing profile make an effective combination for subduing and restraining criminals planetside, though it's true the '62LE has only mediocre space performance and is best suited to rescues and routine patrol work in orbit. Due to the affordability of the base UT-62LE, some aerospace forces have gone to the expense of upgrading their drives, life support, and re-mounting a hyperdrive to make them viable system patrol craft.
