This burden had made her bitter and resentful, especially given her job as a technician on the USCSS Montero—a role that was both demanding and underpaid.

Her job was critical to the ship’s operations; without her, the Montero would likely fall apart. Yet, she felt undervalued and underpaid. The constant pressure to send money home added to her dissatisfaction, making her desperate for any opportunity to increase her earnings.
Despite her bitterness, Kayla was a highly skilled technician. Her proficiency in maintaining and repairing the ship’s systems made her indispensable. Her sharp eyes, though often tired, missed nothing when it came to diagnosing technical issues. Her short, messy black hair and lean build gave her a rugged, almost defiant appearance. She wore a standard-issue technician's jumpsuit, practical and worn, with various tools hanging from her belt—symbols of her hard work and dedication.
