Naturally Attuned

Your mother's family is one that usually guards a specific grove of forests, and tends to plantlife there. Your father was one of the gem emissaries (Gemissary) that have the job of checking in on each place to note how things are going, fell in love with your mother, and your mother's family somehow drove out of Zerande.
  Your mother doesn't speak of him, and is timid about you searching for him. After discovering her pregnancy, your mother left her family in order to live at the capital, potentially out of protection. (Her leaving her own family is an optional component here but you're more likely to get help finding dad in the capital)
  The people you've grown to know at the capital, hearing any part of this story themselves get curious. One thing leads to another and an investigation is made further into why your dad disappeared, as he would have previously been working FOR the governing body of the country, being one of the people responsible for investigating the communities meant to protect the land, but those emissaries being gone long periods of time isn't uncommon as they may just have long trips, or be attacked along the route.
  It's through this, eventually the Sapphire emissary of Edren, now on notice for the specifically gemmed dragonborn should word happen to come of him, luckily gets word that one was spotted in Edren, but hadn't gotten word past that as of yet. He has some of his people on lookout, but policing for a dragonborn like that isn't so much his job. He wouldn't even be aware of or care of the matter if it wasn't a Gem emissary that had went missing for unreported reasons.
