Lorcaster University Campaign Intro
In the year 1610 (common era) a sizable swath of the student body (and one professor) at Lorcaster University became afflicted by a gaggle of succubii. Lorcaster University (LU) is a renowned college of the magic arts, located in the heart of cosmopolitan Lorcaster on the planet Etolar.
The succubi threat was uncovered and dealt with by a band of capable adventurers. In the aftermath not all the students recovered quickly from the emotional and physical trauma. Some were able to continue their education, while others were too traumatized to continue.
One of their liberators was a former student named Ranala Fane, a Tiefling Wizard of some renown and infamy. She signed on as a junior academician at LU. Having survived traumas of her own, she was uniquely suited to help the infernally-afflicted. Her work helped many students recover and/or return home for extended family care.
She did not work alone. Tending to twenty-some afflicted students, each with unique needs, required more than one person. Ranala enlisted a Gnome coordinator named Matreous Muvalon along with help from aspiring adventurers. For minimal pay (and the intangible benefit of friends in important places), you all formed a loose “party” that went on numerous small and tedious missions. Sometimes you would fetch herbs from the swamp, sometimes you simply monitored recovering students watching for signs of remission. In extreme cases you escorted students back to their homes in towns distant from Lorcaster.
Finally the task of care became manageable for one person. Ranala handed you your final pouch of wages and held a small gathering in the finest staff dining hall at LU to thank you for your help. One-by-one several students you helped expressed their gratitude to the group. It was a warm end to the delicate process. Ranala was apologetic about the small wages (often bolstering your pay from her own funds). To make up for the shortfall, she revealed she has been crafting (minor) items of magic for each of you. She indicated she’d send word when your gifts were ready.
Several months have passed. Recently rumors circulated that Ranala had left LU., about that time you receive an invitation from Matreous that reads:
“Dear associates, it is with mixed emotions that I invite you to once again return to Lorcaster University. On a positive note, the items Ms. Fane promised you are to be delivered. But on the other hand Ms. Fane abruptly departed employment at LU and I’m not certain she will be in attendance. At any rate, I am duty bound to carry out her instructions. If it suits your schedule, please arrive at LU in the 14th hour, on the 9th day of the eighth month (Jaedum) of the 1,611th year (CE). If your schedule does not allow, I will make special arrangements to deliver your gift as best as I am able. Your humble servant Matreous”
