Gurry
Many followers of the Shark cult of Vuotnaivi do not know what or who is a Gurry. Secrecy being a large part of their persona & tasks, only people who have been part of the cult for a long time (or who have advanced in their ranks with haste) will know of a few select group of people tasked with spying and collecting information for the cult.
These people always have special talents: druids able to shift into dogs and listen in on people's conversations, wizards who can spy with their familiars and then coerce information through spells, or bards who can cunningly infiltrate themselves where necessary.
Recruitment
Potential gurries are recruited during the initiation at the Icy Houses. After witnessing their abilities (usually during the fight), the potential gurries are approached and offered a unique opportunity:
Fail your next task. Pretend not worthy of the Way of Predation and you will find a unique path ahead of you.
Training
Gurries receive little or no training. Rather, they are given increasingly difficult tasks to test their mettle and progress. Usually, at this stage, only the person who recruited them knows of their existence. If they fail, or even if they are discovered, most people can deny any knowledge or association with the gurry recruit.
A proper Gurry
Once the recruiter deems the gurry to be worthy of the title and task, a ceremony is held with other gurries and the higher eschalon of the cult. After that point, the gurry's real work begins. Often times, the new gurry will be given their new job straight ahead. When there is not a new job available, they will be asked to lie low and keep their ears open.
Came here from the Icy Houses Article. Fascinating additional depth. Love the idea of initiates being told to fail on purpose. Imagine the weird..tear with that. Is that another test in and of itself? Imagine the turmoil in the initiates minds when this is given as an option, though they don't really know that it is one or if its just some ploy.
Exactly what I was going for! I'm glad you enjoy that idea. If you want to delve deeper into what happens to gurries later on, you can also read another SC article... ;)
