Leon spent most of his youth apprenticed to a hematurge of high standing within the Monarchy. When it came time to practice his hemomancy for the first time, it was revealed that his magic was cursed, that he would harm just as much as heal when performing magic. When this was revealed, his fellow apprentices shunned him and gave him his epithet "the Maledict", as opposed to his master, who saw unseen potential. Isolated from his peers, Leon only spent a few more years as an apprentice before leaving to train and become better than his peers despite his cursed magic.
