Ritual magic
Ritual magic, also called circle magic, is magic that involved drawing or inscribing a circle onto a surface. You must know what you plan to use it for in advance and it may only do that one task. Ritual magic was much more common when magic was popular. This is because its much easier to perform than personal magic as well as it can stay active without further input once it's up and running.
Like Personal magic, ritual magic is used by Oth. Ritual magic can be used by Avalia and H'ove, though it is very difficult for them. Sometimes leading to a curse or death for non-oth. Though once the ritual is done they can use an item effected by magic with no ill effects.
Ritual magic falls into two schools, Utility and Sealing. It's called ritual magic because a ritual is often needed to get it to work the first time if you aren't versed in personal magic. Utility magic effects the item or person in the circle while sealing magic effects the item or person that the circle is on.
Affliction rituals are extremely taboo and were outlawed by the council as its first action after being formed.
Runic seals can also be used to strengthen the item they are on, usually used on clothing to prevent wear and tear. You can make a simple shirt stab, cut, or even bullet proof if enough time and effort is put into the ritual.
Ill made, too low level, or unwilling locks can unravel over time. Sometimes this can be dangerous for the locked person or object and their surroundings. The most famous case of this was when the most powerful wizard was locked to suppress all their magic. They were willing, the highest level was used, the highest level materials were sued, the lock was engraved into their body, and it was done correctly.. and still the seal was built to do something it could not handle and it unraveled in a dangerous way. Casing magical buildup that lead to the poor man exploding, taking the city he was in with him. There is a lake there now, in the crater left behind. Needless to say, locks are a touchy subject among magic users and had massive restrictions put on them by the council. The participant must be willing and there must be official witnesses present when casting it to make sure of this, and to make sure its done correctly.
Utility
Utility rituals are usually cast on the ground and effect what is inside them. There are two types, Effect and AfflictEffect
Effect rituals are meant to be stepped into for them to work. They can be used as amplifiers for personal magic, alarm systems that warn if some one enters, grant temporarily enhances senses, block magic inside them, prevent certain beings or items from entering or leaving, and so on. They can even be used to teleport safely between them or to specific places. Effect rituals can be activation based, so once set up the effects can be toggled on and off without needing to preform the ritual again. All of this must be decided before hand. A creative person can cast an effect ritual onto slips of paper or cloth then activate then when holding them against another person or object, effectively making them portable. This is difficult though, as they spells are complicated and hard to get into a small space. Another creative use of them is to cast them while the components are on smaller items like rocks. These small items can be collected and stored, then placed properly later to recreate the effect. Though, for this to work reliably, they must be stored together when not in use.Afflict
Afflict rituals are extremely hard to pull off and often require material components to be used up, including live sacrifice, depending on what you are trying to accomplish. The person or item being afflicted must be in the circle at the time of the ritual. A more fitting word for this would be alteration as the 'afflicted' is being physically changed.Affliction rituals are extremely taboo and were outlawed by the council as its first action after being formed.
Sealing
Sealing magic is used to affect what its written on, sometimes temporarily and sometimes permanently. The name is a bit misleading as it isn't always locking away things and has many more uses than Utility rituals. Sealing magic is broken up into several types.Runic
Runic seals are usually small and be cast on many items at the same time. They can only be used on items, but are extremely useful in day to day life. They can be used as lights, it set up to glow on command. As well as other illusions even ones involving smells, feel, and taste. An exceptional Runic user could cast a ritual on mud and make it taste like cake.Runic seals can also be used to strengthen the item they are on, usually used on clothing to prevent wear and tear. You can make a simple shirt stab, cut, or even bullet proof if enough time and effort is put into the ritual.
Locks
Locks are used the way one would expect sealing magic to work. They seal away magical aura and ability, and sometimes even memories. There are several levels of lock, each more difficult, intricate, and expensive to. They are also effected by the will of the person they're beings used on. Someone unwilling is much harder to lock away.Ill made, too low level, or unwilling locks can unravel over time.
Boost
Boost seals are highly illegal and were banned by the council along with Afflict Utility rituals. They are, in effect, the same as Afflict, only they are cast onto the subject and not around them.
