Humans

Humans: Arrival

The arrival of Humanity to Duende was unique amongst the races. They did not arrive once, but multiple times, over the course of several thousand years. The first wave arrived as refugees through a gate created by the Hyperborean shortly prior to the cataclysm that struck Earth, landing in the vast desert region of the Aecheatl continent. Over the course of the next several centuries, they established a culture that spanned the desert, many learning to survive and even thrive in the hostile foreign environment.

The second wave arrived upon the discovery of Duende by advance military scouting parties that were thousands of light years away and completely unaware of the cataclysm wracking their homeworld. This group crash landed in the western Aeleone region. Unlike their kin, they found themselves in a lush environment surrounded by an abundance of resources the likes of which they had never known. Over time, they spread to cover the northwestern half of the continent, founding several kingdoms.

Humans: Overview

Humans are, well, human. They are a rather short lived race of hairless monkey that seem to be driven by the fact of their short lives to move and breed as fast as possible. They are endlessly curious, particularly about things they shouldn't be curious about, and are generally foolish enough to meddle in what they don't understand. To make matters worse, they are neither particularly suited, nor particularly unsuited, to anything!

Humanity's greatest weakness, their short lifespan, provides impetus for their two greatest assets, their mind, and each other. Humanity is unsurpassed in their mental and physical malleability at an individual and social level, often creating complex structures that foster their generally cooperative nature, making them a devastating force to contend with en masse. Despite other races perceived physical or mental advantages, no other race enjoys the sheer blank-slatedness of being human. Humans get neither penalty nor bonus to any Flagstone or attribute, however, their adaptability more than make up for any lack they suffer as a result.

Humans: Homeland

Humans arose on a small blue planet on the edge of the Milkyway galaxy known as Earth. Prior to the Era of Desolation, Earth was filled with large reptillian species and mega flora and fauna. Originally, the landmasses were joined together in the continent known as Pangea, and despite the size and variety of animal life, the creatures were mostly peaceful and unafraid of humans, who were the only fully conscious species on the planet. Other unique features of this world was the sheer volume of liquid water spread across the surface of the planet, and its proximity to its star which maintained temperatures ideally suited for life.

Early in the planets formation, it was a node planet, full to overflowing with mana. It was this that allowed not only the evolution of life on its surface, but also led to the development of the Hyperborean race as humanity learned to access it. However, during the Era of Desolation, much of the mana of the planet was drained away, and many of the more magical inhabitants were forced to flee during the cataclysm that broke the world. Ever resilient, the planet recovered in time, and life continued to thrive, though it was greatly changed from its previous forms.

Humans: Pre-Era of Desolation

Humanity, prior to the Era of Desolation, were far more advanced than their descendents. Having lived for thousands of years and achieved a state of civilization-wide spiritual enlightenment, they viewed themselves as having transcended their basic evolution. Seeing themselves as more than their original forms, they renamed themselves the Hyperborean. In this advanced state, they had become so attuned to the mana flowing through their chakras that they mastered their own reincarnation, allowing them to achieve a state of quasi-immortality through a combination of immediate rebirth and retention of the memories of their past lives. Interestingly, these traits bred true in their offspring, though their birth rates dramatically declined as their extended lifespans changed their behaviors. Within a few short millenia, this lead to a fairly drastic class distinction between the two groups, a disparity of power that was near impossible to overcome.

It was the arrogance of the Hyperboreans that eventually led to the near eradication of life on Earth during the Era of Desolation. Blinded by their own power and viewing themselves as 'supreme beings', they allowed themselves to be drawn into to developing technologies that would, alongside those of other races, change the face of the universe itself in their quest for more power. When the consequences of their actions echoed back on the Earth, it unleashed a cataclysm unlike any the world had ever seen. Entire continents were driven into the mantle, others were thrust upward into the light of day; earthquakes, volcanoes, and floods that crested over the tops of the highest mountains wreaked havoc upon the world.

Humans: Origins

Humanity originated on a mixed environment planet called Earth, known for its vast oceans diverse biosphere. Their adaptability and creativity enabled them to create tools to overcome virtually any challenge they encountered, promoting them to the top of the food chain on their home world as they conquered every environment.

Interestingly enough, despite some sensitivity to mana, their scientific and creative aptitude largely blinded them to its existence for many centuries. Yet, it was the discovery of mana that allowed them to create and design ships that could leave their solar system and begin the centuries long expansion and colonization of other worlds. Once they learned how to leave their solar system, it didn’t take long for them to expand outwards and eventually make contact with other sentient species.

The confirmation of intelligent life in the galaxy had a unifying effect on humanity that no other event in their history had ever managed, driving them to set aside a long history of internal racial and political conflict to stand together as a united species. Their first encounter, for better or worse, was with a race of nomadic hostile insectoids that moved from planet to planet like locust, consuming the resources of a world to increase their strength before moving on.

In true human fashion, this became a fight for survival that led to the creation of an intergalactic space force; a joint effort between humanities scientific, military, and economic entities. It was this force, developed over the following centuries, that eventually participated in the wars that raged during the Era of Desolation.

Humans: Era of Desolation

The Era of Desolation was a dark age in human history. Gone was the lush landscape and rich variety that had sustained humanity since they first awoke to their own consciousness. Gone to were the Hyperborean, fled into self-imposed exile. Those that managed to survive the inital desolation struggled daily to find food and water as they roamed lands poisoned by salt. The once peaceful creatures of the world had been driven mad with fear during the cataclysm, and the harsh environment had changed them into forms no longer recognizable. Wild swings in the temperatures led eventually to a global ice age that lasted thousands of years.

Still, humans are nothing if not resilient, and in time, they learned to thrive as the Earth slowly recovered from the wreckage of the past. As the ages passed, so to did the knowledge of their history, as their memories slowly faded to myth and legend. From this wreckage a new human race emerged, learning once more to adapt to, and master, their environment. As their peace and prosperity returned, their leisure once more allowed them time to turn their attention inward, rediscovering the keys to their lost heritage: their chakra and the mana within.
