Aether Crystals
These massive crystals dot the land, some so large that they rival mountains, and most are remnants of the War of the Wyrms.
As the name implies, Aether Crystals are grown from the condensation of the Aether that makes up magic. Some form naturally in areas of high Aether content. Most are, however, developed in one of two ways.
The first is the impact of a spell. Of any size really, but throwing a lightning bolt into the ground will stimulate the growth of the crystals.
The second is a more literal condensation of the crystals, which occurs when large spells are woven at once, resulting in the crystal growth in the area immediately around the caster, if their spellwork is sloppy.
These crystals provide a transportable source of Aether, so that a mage is never truly out of a particular kind needed for their craft.
The mining and exportation of these crystals is a common job in most every nation, and important to the general economy of the world, as many have become reliant on imports for crystals of particular aspects in their home territories.
