The Call of the Rasta

A Deebee rastafarian of the The Church of Bob is in Rifthaven spreading the word that there is a promised land waiting for them in Tolkeen.      This should appeal to the people who feel persecuted by humans, especially, but all people who feel persecuted will find the idea has a certain appeal.  Since Rifthaven is full of refugees fleeing death and destruction on their homewards, this message is well received.    A large number of the Zem who have just arrived will be making the trip to Tolkeen.  The Zem aren't doing it to flee persecution per se, since they have just arrived to Rifts Earth and have not yet felt pressure from the far-seeing eyes of the Coalition.  Rather, the Zem are going to Tolkeen because they are erudite scholars and performers of arcane mental disciplines, and there is just nothing for them in Rifthaven.

Components

Stakes

If the village aligns against the Coalition, it will be marked for "cleansing." If the village or the players have a good relationship with LT Washington, he might let this fact slip. Otherwise, he will send his assessment back to Chi-Town and await the Coalition forces without giveng them any warning.   If the village looks to Republic of Ishpeming for protection, they will most likely deny it, as they are too far removed. Northern Gun would go out of its way to disrupt any plans the Coalition might have, however; so it might send an envoy to provide a diplomatic shield to keep any Coalition destruction at bay for as long as possible.   If the village agrees to align with the Coalition States, the Sheydors, Monx, and any other obvious deebees must be banished from Rifthaven.

Moral Quandaries

While the Rasta is attempting to collect emigrees rom Rifthaven to go to Tolkeen, Lt. Washington takes a keen interest in the human time travelers of Our Party and will talk up the Coialition to them, trying to get them to return with him to Chi Town.

Red Herrings

The Zem will want to go to Tolkeen based on what they are hearing from Symon. Truly they would be better served going to Lazlo or the city of Dweomer in The Federation of Magic, but the envoy will not allow the topic of either of these places to come up. Aiding the envoy is the overall ignorance of the world by the residents of Rifthaven. Nobody there knows anything about Lazlo or Dweomer, although the Player Characters might, depending on their origins.

Relations

Competitors

The Coalition officer in town would all have something to say about Tolkeen snatching up all the potential refugees.   While the mayor and peacekeeper are happy for anyone willing to leave town to find a better life, they are also reluctant to see valued members of their community leave and potentially leave them weaker and more vulnerable.
Note: This sets the stage for the Adventure Garnet Town Gambit, published by Pinnacle Entertainment Group.
Changes to that adventure are as follows:
  • The location is Rifthaven
  • There is no interest by the The Federation of Magic, but rather Tolkeen.
  • The Tolkeen envoy role is taken by the Rasta Missionary. Although there is a D'Norr Shifter in the Rasta's party and it will still be the one to open the portal. The D'Norr is also the one who speaks with the Zem about how people who can wield magic are held in such high esteem in the city.
  • The coalition representative is Lt. Martha Washington, a Military Specialist, along with a Dog Boy named Kewly and one other soldier (class tbd)

Author's Notes

Note: If one of the players wants to play the role of a coalition soldier, such as a Military Specialist, you might want to consider substituting this player in for Lt. Martha Washington or one of Lt. Washington's men if not a Mil. Spec.   Then you can speak with the player and establish the initial mission objective to ascertain whether this village will aid the coalition or must be purged. The player should also assume the secondary mission to recruit the human players characters to the coalition.   That's how we should start. The game can then progress one of two ways. Either they all go and join the coalition, or the player with the coalition character can assume a Dances With Wolves style plot, eventually defending or siding with the non-coalition characters against the Coalition.
