Bogtreader Catoblepas
"If you're going to learn necromancy from me, then the least you can do is learn some common sense from me as well. Don't go too far from Colmar's towers, alright? At least not without some food to distract something. Understand?"Within The Bog of Colmar , a bizarre beast lives within the outskirts of the ruins, stalking the small streams for targets to feast on. A catoblepas is a distant cousin of the Basilisk, having retained their petrifying stare whilst growing more accustomed to the colder regions of the mainland. Instead of scales, they have furred backs and undersides, along with a set of horns to fend off predators, apparently. The only predators that are known to hunt these creatures however, only live within mountainous regions. The catoblepas has an extreme weight, able to cause the ground beneath them to sink, pushing subterranean creatures out of the ground to feast on. This has a downside, however, with their heads always being positioned downwards, facing into the marshland. Their eyes are shiny, reflective like gemstones, but just as deadly as a sharpened one. They have the ability to petrify anybody who catches their gaze, but this is quite hard due to their weight. Their large bodies are not to be taken lightly though, with a massive amount of strength in their muscles, they are able to crash through most obstacles in their way, including people.- Moira Grace, to Edwin.
There is expected to be approximately 400 Catoblepas in the Bog of Colmar, which an abundance of them being within the eastern regions, where the Yuan-Ti settlements are. They often hunt down creatures that the Yuan-Ti farm, like cows, snakes, and alligators. Some go after pureblood Yuan-Ti's, too. Due to their more humanoid bodies, the Catoblepas often mistake adventurers for these people, often provoking fights which'd end poorly for the adventurers. Clara, an adventurer, has been able to slay many Catoblepas, often gloating of it in Graceswift's other settlements. These creatures are unlikely to ever become anything more than an enemy of the adventurers. They do not seem to be docile towards humanoids, or show any signs of understanding them without the course of magical intervention. Even when communicated with, the Catoblepas is a very violent creature. It targets anybody it does not coexist with, for fun.
