The Hollow Abyss
Every single time I've gone down that place, it's been different! I have no idea how it works, exactly, but whenever I go for some hunting, I find something new. Every, single, time. Whether its some runes, a magical artifact, or some new enemy to expose the weakness of. A shame there's no God of Knowledge down here, they'd probably know all there is to this terrifying place.Located between the pieces of land of Chthonia, deep past the darkness that shrouds the mystical land, lays the Hollow Abyss. Not related to the one of demonic origin, this one only holds one form of magic, being fear. Fears manifest here. They turn into the ones characterized in dreams, which means ultimately, there's a portion of the Hollow Abyss for everyone. Theoretically, there is an end to them, but no charter or explorer of these lands have been able to find a proper end. Ever since Chthonia's been able to be explored by people normally, after Ashfang's Assault on Chthonia , many have been willing to try and enter this land, but have always been barred from entrance by Melinoë, Goddess of Nightmares . She claims that this is because the worst nightmares are found below, and that only select few may be able to descend. Melinoë, however, does not enforce this barricade often. Many adventurers reject this warning and descend, often being the last thing they do.
Deep within the Hollow Abyss, there are a few settlements. These are often done by Nightmares that have been assigned the forms of vile warlords, which have given nightmares to their enemies, innocent civilians, and underlings. These warlords are often warped by the Hollow Abyss to only resonate with the thoughts of those afraid of them. One example of this is the long dead king of a forgotten empire beneath the surface of the sea. He was a sea elf, but throughout hearsay and legend, his form within the Hollow Abyss is of a frightful, rusted suit of armour, with a red-hot sword made of the flesh of a leviathan. In one of the aquatic portions of the Hollow Abyss is a fortress, made of coral, where he lives. He also goes on hunts in other portions of the Abyss, and has partnered himself with Melinoë, to fight common enemies. Other examples of twisted creatures from these depths include Ingvar, from The Red Moon , reimagined as a giant werewolf, capable of summoning dire wolves, as well as Adagi, the Wurm Titan.
Geographically, the Hollow Abyss is made up of many different types of terrain. However, a core theme has been found, being that there is no form of openness. All areas in the Abyss are enclosed, sometimes having natural light come from an inaccessible area. This light does not seen to having a cycle, and it constantly keeps certain areas dimly illuminated. Moss grows almost everywhere in the Abyss, upon ridges, bridges, and cliffsides. It even connects to other areas of the Abyss, areas that should not be able to even house moss. Areas with burning pools of lava, toxic bogs and even submerged coastal areas. Some theorise, from within The Dungeon Crawlers, that the Moss is what continuously creates more of the Hollow Abyss. Some say that it is a nightmare, in of itself, based off of Alkiliths.
Many magical items can be found within the Hollow Abyss, including twisted variations of magical items found within the Material Plane. Excaliburs, Firearms, and other weapons often get given variations within other layers. One example is the Excalibur used by the King of Maisin Maw. This weapon does exactly what it's true counterpart does, but is meant for one the size of a storm giant.
