Biological Traits: Average heights for verdan seem to range between four to five feet in height, with extreme outliers observed to get as tall as five foot six and as small as three foot five. These creatures tend to have skin in shades of green, ranging from lime green to jade, that changes as they age. One noteworthy trait of all verdan is a lack of recognizable blood; The verdan all bleed a black ichor with similar function, but a number of unique traits. One of which being that the blood remains motile, if mindless, for several minutes after extracted from the body. Adult Verdun have longer, larger, floppier ears than their forebearers, the goblinoids from which they are now divorced from, and it is a common tradition for them to pierce and bind their ears together at the tips. Whether this is aesthetic, traditional, or confers some form of biological advantage is unknown. Due to their originating environment being the Underdark, the verdan show some signs of photosensitivity, though not to the extremes displayed by the Derro or Deep Elves ("drow").
It can be difficult to apply generalized traits to the verdan, because their physiology seems to undergo mutation and deviation as a response to external stimuli. verdan prior to puberty tend to display vibrant bright skin colors in shades of lime and pastel greens, it darkens as they grow older. Male verdan tend to have little to no hair, while females sport shocks of wiry hair that they have been observed to wear in a variety of styles. The color of a verdan's hair, as well as their eye colors can transform from its original jade tones to pale white, deep ebon, or any other shade in-between depending on environmental factors that are not yet known, but speculated to be related to an abundance or lack thereof of light.
Changes in gender are also a known and accepted part of verdan life, largely which seem dependent on population density and the abundance or lack of one gender or another. These fluid aspects of form and identity tend to be seen as blessings for the verdan, allowing an individual to experience more of the world and grow in understanding and comprehension of different states.
Many verdun also display some limited telepathic capacities, thought to be attributed to the tampering of a primordial entity upon their species.
Observations on Origins and Culture: Created when agents of Acquisitions Incorporated unleashed a primordial entity, That-Which-Endures, upon the Underdark, the verdan are the end results of what can best be described as "generations of deliberately shaped evolution via exposure to chaotic and unpredictable magics" occurring within a localized bubble of dialated and warped space/time. The verdan emerged from this experience understandably disoriented and lacking a centralized culture or indeed most notions of a cultural identity in the first place.
Upon emerging from the Underdark, most pockets of the verdan species began adopting the cultural practices of the areas within which they migrated. It's not uncommon for verdan to observe and start imitating people or cultures that leave a strong impression upon them in the hopes of replicating or attaining some part of their success.
Verdan as a species tend to be hungry to undertake new challenges and absorb new experiences. When they meet other verdan who have taken a different path through life it is common for the two parties to exchange anecdotes of their experiences and observations from their travels through life. However, their inexperience in the world sometimes lends itself in the verdan a kind of naivete that works against them. Some are credulous and easily fooled by hucksters or taken in by cults that seek to indoctrinate them to a set way of thinking. With so little in the way of a united cultural history, the verdan are impressionable, idealistic, and dangerously innocent.
Verdan Racial Traits:
Ability Score Modifiers: Verdan are outgoing and creative, but lack cultural awareness. They tend to be impressionable and easily swayed. They gain +2 Charisma, +2 Constitution, and –2 Wisdom.
Size: Verdan start out a similar Small size to goblins, ranging from 3 to 4 feet in height. However at some point after reaching maturity they undergo a sudden and painful growth spurt. At 1st level, you are a Small creature. When you reach 5th level, you become a Medium creature.
Type: Verdan are Humanoids with the goblinoid subtype.
Base Speed: Verdan have a base speed of 30 feet.
Languages: Verdan begin play speaking Undercommon and Goblin. Verdan with high Intelligence scores can choose from the following: Common, Draconic, Drow, Dwarven, Gnoll, Gnome, Halfling, and Orc. See the Linguistics skill page for more information about these languages.
DEFENSE RACIAL TRAITS
Enduring Black Blood: The black ichor that is a sign of your people's connection to That-Which-Endures boosts your people's healing. You heal at twice the natural rates, and once per day may call upon the power of That-Which-Endures to grant you Fast Healing 1 for as many combat rounds as you have hit dice.
FEAT AND SKILL RACIAL TRAITS
Endearing: Your people's lack of history makes you appear trustworthy and humble. You gain a racial +2 bonus to the Diplomacy skill.
MAGICAL RACIAL TRAITS
Limited Telepathy: You can telepathically speak to any creature you can see within 30 feet of you. You don't need to share a language with the creature for it to understand your telepathy, but it must be able to understand at least one language. This process of communication is slow and limited, allowing you to transmit and receive only simple ideas and straightforward concepts.
SENSES RACIAL TRAITS
Low-Light Vision: Verdan can see twice as far as humans in conditions of dim light.
