Ragnarok

" This world is utterly uninhabitable. there wasnt even a single blip on our bioscanners when we tried to search for signs of life here. Its hauntingly beautiful though, and it certainly does offer plenty of research opportunities! Besides, our resource scanners did examine the planet and holy fucking space, this world contains a fucking shit ton of metals and minerals! We are definitely coming back here after we get a few colonies up and running around this star group."   Soras Valcoran, remarking on Ragnarok after discovering it with the rest of the FENRIS expedition during the late 22nd century
Ragnarok is a world located in the region of the Gehennian gate, a region of space surrounding The great rift. It is a nigh uninhabitable volcanic wasteland, with its surface being marred by gigantic cracks caused by its extremely unstable core. Large volcanoes dominate most of the planet, spewing ash and toxic fumes into the poisonous and suffocating atmosphere. This, combined with the crushing gravity and searing heat released from the cracks that come from the planets core, makes Ragnarok probably the only uninhabitable celestial object mankind has encountered.   The most mysterious thing about the planet however, is that despite all the attempts by mankind and every other race to terraform this world, every Terraforming attempt has failed, with even void based terraforming failing to make the planet inhabitable. To this day, the anomaly has not been solved and Ragnarok remains the harsh and violent world it always was

Geography

"Those shitheads who call Old Venus hell have clearly not heard the name of Ragnarok. If there was a planet that was literally hell, this would be it"   Attributed to an unknown officer on board a station orbiting Ragnarok"
Ragnarok is a harsh and uninhabitable world of fire and toxic fumes. The atmosphere is so thick that it does not even let a glimmer of light from its parent star to penetrate to the surface.   The surface itself is an uninhabitable, fiery desolate wasteland marred with gigantic cracks, faults, rifts, volcanoes and other geological features. Due to the extremely high temperatures found on Ragnarok, the surface also has numerous "oceans" and bodies of lava that circulate across the entire planet. Gigantic volcanoes dominate the surface of Ragnarok, with each of them constantly and violently spewing out ash and other toxic materials into the sky.   The only form of precipitation that can be found on Ragnarok are rock and iron rain that come from gaseous iron and rocks which rise to the atmosphere. The resulting precipitation has been likened to a rain of fire by the few researchers on the surface of the planet itself.

Planetary fissures

" What fascinated me most about Ragnarok was not the volcanoes or the other "Fiery features" that can be found on pretty much every volcanic world in the milky way, but the gigantic cracks that are spread across the surface of this world. They criscross the entire planet and are apparently caused by the geologic disturbance due to the incredibly unstable nature of its core. Its kind of horrifyingly beautiful i would say"   Soras Valcoran, describing the gigantic fissures that cover the surface of Ragnarok on his research journal
Probably the most interesting and fascinating feature of Ragnarok are the gigantic cracks that envelop the entire surface of the planet. These cracks are caused by geological disturbances inside the planets geologically unstable core.   Whilst the entire planet is hot enough to vaporise iron and strip a man of his skin in the blink of an eye, the temperatures around these cracks can grow upto fourty thousand degrees Celsius, which is hotter than the surface of most stars. It also remains a mystery as to how the rocks manage to keep themselves solid around those regions, despite the fact that they should have vaporised even at a far cooler temperature.

Volcanoes

" The volcanoes are another incredibly fascinating feature of this world. Never in my life, have i seen more gigantic natural landmarks than the volcanoes here. I swear they could fit entire worlds through their holes and vents".   Soras Valcoran, describing the volcanoes of Ragnarok
.   Ragnarok is home to gigantic volcanoes that dot the surface of this world. Tall and gigantic beyond measure, these mountains of rock and magma are constantly spewing ash, toxic fumes and fire into the sky. What makes them unique however is their sheer size, with some of the volcanoes being even larger than the great planet Jovius. Every few years or so, the volcanoes undergo a particularly violent period of activity, and the entire surrounding regions are submerged in lava due to the intense activity of the volcanoes.

Lava oceans

The only form of liquid that can be found on Ragnarok are large oceans of molten magma. Most of these oceans of magma are located around geological hotspots on Ragnarok, where the temperatures are higher and most of the rock melts due to the intense heat.

Fauna & Flora

Due to the nature and climate of the planet, there exists no indigenous life on Ragnarok. The Imperial Terran Federation has however, had some very minor successes with breeding bacteria specially designed for the nature of the planet, which are mostly used for helping in industrial and mining purposes.

Natural Resources

" The scans came in the other day and what they showed made everyone of our minds boggle. This world is a literal goldmine! I really think we should set up a few mining outposts here at the very least after we are done bumping up a few other colonies in this star group. We are bound to find a habitable world around these parts after all"   Soras Valcoran, remarking on the enormous mineral wealth of Ragnarok in his logbook
Ragnarok is a world of fire and magma. Yet it is useful to mankind for the enormous mineral wealth that the planet holds. Despite all the risks associated with mining on this world, there is a thriving mining industry on the world, which supplies resources to a lot of other planets in the Gehennian gate region. Mining is to be done with extra caution however, as even the slightest mistake can cause the death of an entire mining team.

This really sound like a cool planet! The article is very thorough with most of the information and the quotes are great, both for feeling and to break up the text. I would look over the use of quotation marks within quotes though, it can be a little confusing! Also, I would love to know more about how they actually go about mining on this planet since it's so unstable!

Wow, you have done a really great job at capturing the desolate and inhospitable feeling of the planet. I like the visuals you've chosen, and they fit the setting well. I'd like to know more about how researchers are able to study the planet and grow microorganisms to survive on it. Are there any new technologies that had to be developed to withstand such intense heat? For a place that is such a boon for mining, what attempts have been made if any? Were any successful? If they failed, what went wrong? I'd also suggest finding a different cover image or finding it in a larger size. The planet looks very pixellated which contrasts sharply from the crisp illustrations featured in the rest of the article. This was an excellent read, and I enjoyed your use of quotes to give it context and flavor. You've left me wanting to explore the planet in more depth and possibly join a research ship. Keep up the great work!

It was a really interesting article. I like the idea of an area rich in resources, but almost impossible to harvest. I also like the mystery involved in why hasn't the terraforming worked so far...   I think it'd be interesting to learn what kind of precautions do miners and military take when going to the planet. The sidebar of the article is rather short when compared to the main text, so perhaps you could add a box that details all of the extra precautions people have to take when visiting Ragnarok. Just like Etalia said, I would also like to know more in general about the mining operations in the planet.   About the name: since Ragnarok has a meaning in our world, I think it may be worth explaining how did the planet end up with that specific name. Who named it? Why did they choose that name? Or is there a specific naming list/convention, and that's just what it was time for?   I found a small amount of repetition throughout the text. First in regards to the mystery of why doesn't it terraform. It's explained both at the beginning, as well as in its own section. I think it may be worth expanding its own section a bit more or differentiating it further from that which has been written in the intro. The second repetition I found was in regards to the volcanic activity. The following sentences are all too similar for my liking, I would suggest trying out different formulas, or just condensing this info about the volcanic activities into one section:

  • "Large volcanoes dominate most of the planet, spewing ash and toxic fumes into the poisonous and suffocating atmosphere."
  • "Gigantic volcanoes dominate the surface of Ragnarok, with each of them constantly and violently spewing out ash and other toxic materials into the sky."
  • "Tall and gigantic beyond measure, these mountains of rock and magma are constantly spewing ash, toxic fumes and fire into the sky."
  • Something else worth mentioning/clarifying/adding is the colonies that have been formed in other planets. People are already mining there and doing military training, but from where are they coming and to where do they return once they are done in Ragnarok? How long does the travel take?   Finally, have a look at how to credit images in WA here. There's no need to have them in the Author's notes (unless you really want to). Also, you should really remove the sentence "Artist credits will be coming soon!" as it breaks the reader's immersion into the world, big time.

A fun and through article. I can definitely see an epic training montage happening with the gigantic volcanoes in the background. You don’t get better training then on a plant where everything will end you and scientists have little clue as to what is even going on. Thumbs up from me.
