Dukedom: Tavarin
Tavarin is a dukedom of the Arcanaan Empire and a former kingdom pre-empire. Ever ruled by the vigilant kings and dukes of House Tarlin, it is a border state that has guarded against Dominion invasions since the Crimson Wave in 1008 BA.
Geography
Being the connecting land mass between the Numir's Arm peninsula and continental Abia, Tavarin enjoys a range of climates and varied weather throughout the year. The interior basin between the Sentinels and Numir Mountains is mainly prairie and rolling hills. Fields of wild Triticum (varying species of wheat) cover the basin in a golden brown from one horizon to the other. Its wild growth provides Tavarinian farmers with plenty of seeds to cultivate and grow their own on controlled farmlands. As such, Tavarin is the Empire's primary provider of grain crops and by-products.Territories
A majority of Tavarin is nested between the Sentinels and the Numir Mountain ranges on the east end of the Abian continent. It is a border-state against the Nasir Dominion. It is neighbored by the semi-autonomous imperial province of Sagus, which used to be Tavarin lands. Though still Tavarin de jure, Sagus was broken off by imperial order and reserved for the nephilim refugees from Sage, which proved their worth to the Empire through their actions at the Massacre of Telo Trada, thwarting a Dominion invasion that would have toppled the entire dukedom were it not for their intervention.
Before the Crimson Wave, Tavarin lands actually spread all the way to the shore of the Riah Channel, but land beyond the divide of the Numir Mountains was effectively lost to the Dominion during the Red-Violet War, a period of hot-and-cold conflicts that lasted almost 400 years. There are two Tavarinian counties that still exist beyond the North Numir Mountains. Thanks to the presence of the nephilim just north of them, the Dominion has not attempted to occupy these territories.
Today, there are fifteen (15) counties under Tavarin control. Among these counties, there are 23 baronies.
Military
Like all other dukedoms of the Empire, Tavarin's military is made up of strictly-human soldiers levied from the general population. Most of these men and women are not experienced fighters, but peasant farmers given the minimum level of training necessary to fight in an organized army. Those that show promise may be selected for advancement to the Royal Army, which fights under the orders of Arcana, rather than Telo Trada.
Given Tavarin's proximity to the Dominion, the Royal Army has always maintained a modest garrison at the dukedom's capital. This garrison has been reinforced since the arrival of Odysseus, but imperial officials state this is merely a cautionary measure and the imperator harbors no hostility to Tellan explorers.
