Cassius
Second son of the late Wolven emperor and brother to Amicus. More frail than his brother with an unknown affliction, he sought to challenge Amicus for the title of emperor to create meaningful changes for the wolves of Adastra and the sick Wolven citizens that he saw as forgotten by previous Emperors. Before the novel begins, Cassius struck a contract with the Omorfan Alexios and claims him as a "pet" garnering prestige in the eyes of the Wolven. Cassius acts as an antagonist to the interests of Marco and Amicus during the struggle for emperorship.
Character Synopsis
Cassius is introduced nagging Amicus for having left for two days unannounced and relaying how his duties were done by Virginia in his stead. The day after Amicus returns from Earth, Marco finds Cassius snooping in Amicus's room where he is spotted. A frightened Cassius screams for Cato to come look at the never before seen creature. After Amicus explains why he was gone and what Marco is, Cassius is indignant at the lack of consequences for Amicus's actions. At breakfast later that day Cato the topic of what Marco is dominates the discussion and Cassius threatens to hit Marco for having spilled wine onto Amicus. Amicus returns the threat to Cassius and tells him to never lay a hand on or use Marco for pet duties. A few days later Cassius demands Marco service him and Virginia in the gardens where Marco overhears Cassius's plan to dissolve the triumvirates as well as Virginia's statement of neutrality in the trials. The first trial begins with Cassius and Alexios winning the Trial of Dance in a display that makes Marco conclude the relationship between Cassius and Alexios may be more than a formality. A week after the first trial, Marco and Amicus return to Amicus's room to find Cassius once again snooping around. As he is leaving, Cassius nearly punishes Marco for brushing his paw away but Amicus punches him in the face and breaks his tail. Cassius curses Amicus and announces he will kill Marco when he becomes emperor. Cassius bugs Amicus's room and video tapes Amicus and Neferu's hookup which he then broadcasts during the Trial of Rhetoric. Despite this, he loses to Amicus due the Triumvirates. Wins the emperorship in a staged third trial at the insistence of Cato following his discovery of Amicus and Marco's relationship. Despite becoming emperor, Cassius is clearly uncomfortable in the position of emperor and decides to step down after political pressure from Virginia, Neferu, and Marco. Cato discovers his plans and poisons Cassius to attempt to take the throne. Cassius spends days recovering (a month?) and concedes emperorship to Amicus. Cassius and Marco run into one another after his recovery and Cassius thanks Marco for putting the empire back in balance, but also tells him to make sure the people are the first to benefit from the alliance with Khemia. While the trials for succession and the subsequent events damaged his relationship with Amicus and Virginia, he continues being a representative for the emperor on administrative missions as the Chief of Social Affairs. Cassius travels with Alexios around the countryside in an administrative mission to help out the poor Wolven outside of the major cities. Amicus and Marco take a month long tour to meet up with Cassius and bring them back to the palace before Marco departs on his mission. If the player makes certain choices, Marco runs into Cassius and Alexios in the palace the morning he is to leave for earth. Cassius is very drunk and doesn't notice Marco until last minute and acts embarrassed in front of him. Marco questions Alexios about his motives for being in the palace. Cassius answers that they are there to take the emperor's ship to Omorfa and that the Omorfan's are now against the parents. Alexios pulls Cassius away as Marco reflects upon the interaction.
