Menzoberranzan

One of the major Drow cities in the Feydark, Menzoberranzan is a near-metropolis like location full of prominent Noble houses and powerful Drow and Aberrations alike. Menzoberranzan is usually the exact idea people have in their head when they think of corrupt and dangerous cities that litter the massive caverns beneath the earth of Aden, swirling with twisted energies from the Feywild.

Demographics

Menzoberranzan is actually filled with a majority of slaves; whether from the surface or born and bred beneath the earth. Slaves vary from Humans to Dwarves to even Elves and Halflings, and they are the main labor force that power a lot of the industrial and infrastructural progression of the city.   Drow are the second most common (if all the slaves are considered one 'race'), numbering in just over half of the amount of slave population. It is the Drow that hold all of the power in the city, and even then, that power is only held by the women. The women far outnumber the men, and some of the male Drow can easily be lumped under the slave category.   In lesser numbers, there are Beholders, Mind Flayers, and even Duergar going about their day to day, trading and political-mongering as is their whims.

Government

Menzoberranzan - as well as the entirety of the Drow-controlled Feydark, is a Matriarchy. Men are not allowed any power or right to rule, even if they were born to the High Priestess as well. Due to the teachings of Lolth, men are seen as lesser in nearly all ways, and frequently serve as the grunts and soldiers; frequently tasked to go to the surface to steal supplies and manpower, be it elven or otherwise.   Besides that, the culture itself is almost backstab-encouraging. If you wish for a position of power and believe yourself better to rule, then kill your superior. If you succeed, congratulations on your promotion. If you fail? You likely won't be alive for it to even matter. Loyalty is an extremely scarce commodity and nearly no one deals or trades in it, and it's said that things are like this as a means of survival of its own, in a twisted way.

Infrastructure

While Menzoberranzan does have an errant gas mixture trapped in a cavity in the ceiling that mimics a sort of "sun" with its glow, giving dim lighting to the area at most hours of the "day", it does not function as actual sunlight for much agriculture to grow, as a result - most of Menzoberranzan's infrastructure leans further away from natural greenery and much more towards towers and spires of stone, with fibrous mushrooms for thread and paneling where applicable.   As a result, most of the facilities in question are leaning towards smelteries, masonries, leather-work, and many roads and bridges for brevity.

Assets

Drow are considered the most industrial Elves in the world to those who are aware of what they've made. Menzoberranzan tops that by having an immense source of Cold Iron accessibility - something that the city takes extreme advantage of in.. very unscrupulous ways. Many torturous apparatuses are made out of Cold Iron to give it that extra.. kick when it comes into contact with Fey skin. It's said that the screams can be heard for miles.   Besides that, Menzoberranzan has pretty fair access to mithral, though the scarcity of it restricts its usage to only for the richer of the noble houses.   What they lack most is food, however. Farming is far more difficult under the earth, even disregarding the artifical sun Menzoberranzan has, and the cramped confines of the caverns of the Feydark in addition to the violent nature of some of the bestial races found within make ranching just as hard. Menzoberranzan receives most of its food and similar supplies via raids on the surface; particularly around the The Kingdom of Teitanga's Timberlands.

Guilds and Factions

Menzoberranzan is host to its own assortment of noble Drow houses; their influence spreads far and wide outside of the city, but you'd be hard-pressed to find a Drow living in another city that would admit it without coercion.   The "main" house (at the moment, anyway) rules as head of the "council" that governs all major decisions for the city.
  • House Mizzrym
It is House Mizzrym that at the moment has the greatest amount of strength amongst all the other houses of the Feydark, and it is due large in part to their High Priestess, Reyia Mizzrym, who besides her ridiculously venerable age of at least a millenia or two, (yet looks no older than the typical Drow adult age of 100, a very unusual fact as well), she has been able to quell hundreds upon hundreds of assassination and backstabbing and even full on revolutionary attempts on her seat of power. Many Drow whisper that her time will soon come, but as of late.. They've confined such whisperings to dark alleyways and dank basements, rather than the custom of doing it right out in the open.   The other houses on the council of Menzoberranzan are as follows.
  • House Deya
  • House Tyrian
  • House Dothielios
  • House Hylio
  • House Arvendel
They hold significant power in the city, though not quite absolute thanks to House Mizzrym. Even so, their names strike fear and dissuasion into the hearts of those who would seek to.. cause trouble while within the city's walls. It's said that they would be a much stronger force if they worked together as often as they spend backstabbing and killing each other in political plays, but such is the nature of Drow.   Minor noble houses do find their spaces in Menzoberranzan, but they are simply seen as Upper-Middle Class citizens rather than nearly as notable as the greater noble houses. ((They will remain unlisted unless a player chooses to make a noble house related to them.))
