The Blight

The Blight—never before have I seen a disease ravage a population in such a horrific fashion. The poor flooding the streets, with green goo pouring from lesions on their skin... burning them from the inside out...
— Adran Sagespirit

Transmission & Vectors

The Plague was able to directly infect people with the Blight, which is how the Blight first became released into Berfordia. is able to do this by scratching people with his claws, or if someone breathes in or ingests his breath weapon. Once it is out in the open it can spread through a number of ways. These include animals, insects, scratches, touch, the air, and the water supply. Quarantining has shown to be an effective way of limiting the spread of the Blight.

Causes

This disease was magically created by The Plague's experiments with the Contagion spell, which he did under the orders of his superior. He was eventually able to make his retractable claws produce the disease, allowing him to infect people with only a touch. The Cult of Chroma used the disease to cripple Berfordia, extort money from its citizens, and to exterminate races other than Dragonborn.

Symptoms

The infection is harder to notice when it’s in its first stage, however it is extremely obvious when the skin lesions appear in the second stage. The lesions appear as small greenish pimples, and will eventually grow into large pustules on the body. These lesions are filled with a sort of acid and infected people will feel a burning sensation in them from time to time, eventually becoming more painful. Eventually the acid from these will burst, burning holes in the body, causing internal bleeding, and eventually leading to death. The stages of the Blight are detailed below.

Treatment

A patient can be cured of this disease by some magic, such as a paladin’s Lay on Hands ability. However, as this cure is by magic, it barely provides an immunity. This means if a person is cured by magic they still have a high chance of getting infected again. A nonmagical cure has not yet been discovered.

Prognosis

Oftentimes, people who contract the Blight die within a matter of weeks. It was designed, and proved to be, one of the deadliest diseases on the continent.
