On Valerick there are six distinct species you can play, but within that their end up being nine, as humans have three distinct varieties, and elves have two. With your GMs permission you could patchwork traits of the two elf types and make a mongrel of sorts, as they are both species of elf and can reproduce with each other. Same with humans, obviously, indeed that is likely the most common sort of human, just a grab bag of like one racial trait from each one, a mishmash of sorts.
Unlike other fantasy settings, though inter species relationships and romances occur, these sorts of relationships have a much lower likelihood of producing offspring. Because of this, though not taboo, they are less common than in other fantasy settings you may be used too.
Half-Breeds:
If you wish to play a half elf/half human or something and you and your GM feel you can make it work and cherry pick and stitch it together, feel free. Don't think what is written above is gospel. It is YOUR game and YOUR world when your group is playing within it. Use what bits you want, discard what bits you don't need. Nothing is sacred, everything is permitted, so long as all parties involved in the story-telling experience are cool with it.
