Markus Vahlen

Markus is one of the few humans from Bael in Uruger, known as the city of monsters. After his family was slaughtered at the hands of a ruthless hobgoblin warlord, Markus fled into the wilds of the region and has lived off the land ever since. After joining up with dwarven prince Rasanz Firebread and the fire sorceress Lasaerys Facyne, he became the leader of the adventuring group known as the Bears of Bael. They would go on several quests together, earning the reputation as one of the most efficient and productive parties in the region.

Personal history

Born in the heart of Bael, Markus knew very little about the outside world. His family was descended from Cespion spellcasters who fled the Corinian Empire is search of safety and refuge. They ended up in Bael, fitting into the minority of residents who are human, elven, or dwarven. Instead, the city is comprised of the primarily monstrous races, such as goblinoids, orcs, trolls, and ogres. Outcast races like tiefling and dragonborn are welcome with open arms. As a human in Bael, Markus had to grow up fending off harassers, bullies, and those looking to subjugate humans for their entertainment. When he was eleven, his family was murdered by a hobgoblin warlord looking to make a name for himself. His intention was to cleanse the city of any humans, either driving them out or killing them in cold blood. Markus escaped to the wilderness of Uruger, where he had to learn to survive on his own.
Years passed, and Markus transformed from a street urchin to a master of the wilderness. He would go months at a time without seeing civilization, instead just living off of the land, hunting, fishing, and creating his own shelter. He learned to befriend the beasts of the plains, and even found ways to communicate with them.

Accomplishments & Achievements

As he made his way to southeastern Uruger, just north of the Burnt Mountains, he came upon a recently destroyed village. It was attacked by a hill giant tribe, its cattle consumed with only bones remaining, and most of its villagers eaten or crushed. Only one dying farmer remained alive to inform Markus of the atrocities committed here. Taking it upon himself to avenge the lost village, and slay the monsters that torment the world of men, he marched into the slopes of the mountains in search of the hill giants. Using his skills as a ranger of Uruger, he slayed the hill giant chieftan, and his renowned as a giant slayer echoed through the region.
