Lasting Trauma
When you are knocked unconscious by violent actions, you might develop a trauma or other lingering trauma.
When you recover your Death Saves, make a DC 10 Wisdom Check (+5 for each failed death save you currently have). If you fail, you become Frightened of the thing that nearly killed you.
After the encounter, the fear develops into a relevant trauma decided by the GM. In the future, whenever you encounter your trauma, you must succeed a DC 15 Wisdom Save. If you fail, you are
Frightened of whatever triggered your trauma . On a natural 1 you are
Panicked instead.
Recovering From Trauma
Summary: once you have defeated your trauma in some way and rested in a safe place, you can attempt a Wisdom Save to recover from your trauma.
DC is 8 + Triggering Creature's CR or
8 + Double the Triggering Effect's Spell Level.
Details: whenever you overcome your trauma
(e.g. slaying a creature you are afraid of; overcoming a challenge you are afraid of; escaping a situation you are afraid of; etc.) you might be able to recover.
After overcoming your trauma , the next time you complete a Long Rest in a safe place (see below), you can attempt a Wisdom Save with DC is 8 + Triggering Creature's CR or 8 + Double the Triggering Effect's Spell Level. If you succeed, you recover from your trauma . You can gain bonuses to this check by spending a longer time resting:
- +1d4 for a full week's recovery.
- +1d8 for a full month's recovery.
- +1d4 if the safe place is magically warded against evil (stacks with other bonuses).
- Advantage on the check if you have defeated your trauma multiple times before attempting to recover (stacks with other bonuses).
Safe Place: whether a place is safe is determined by the GM, but it generally means someplace where there is no real threat of monster attacks or other dangers. Somewhere that you can relax and recover.
