Dartanian Deloffre V (de-la-FRAY)
Gedonese rogue, swashbuckling scoundrel, and general malfeasant.
Background
House Deloffre is a Gedonese noble house, one of the most powerful houses during the founding of Gedone, though it has plunged into bankruptcy and relative obscurity in recent decades. The Deloffre line is filled with men who have a habit of dying tragic early deaths, and as a result, a matriarchy of successive widows tend to be the real political players who hold House Deloffre together. Dartanian the Fifth is the third son of Dartanian Deloffre II (who died during the War of the Lion) and Esmé Deloffre, a steel-haired widow who is determined to bring House Deloffre out of its political and financial doldrums.History
Dartanian V was schooled in the life of the Gedonese aristocracy almost from the cradle, his mother leveraging what remained of House Deloffre’s meager wealth to educate him and his brothers as men of gentry. His eldest brother, Dartanian III, is a pompous and shallow dandy, held firmly under the boot of Matron Deloffre, while his second brother, Dartanian IV, is cunning and ambitious, determined to find political (and material) fortune by his own means. With four separate Dartanians in just two generations, does House Deloffre’s naming conventions make any sense? No, but Matron Deloffre has an unyielding will, and she will do as she pleases. Dartanian V, to the unending dismay of his entire family, has no interest in the partisan machinations of the Gedonese aristocracy. He seeks fame and glory, wanderlust and adventure, and will stop at nothing to find it.Personality
Dartanian sees himself as “a hero of the common man,” which is remarkable considering his lack of experience in both heroics and peasantry. He is unshakably confident, disastrously unlucky, and exceptionally well-mannered, even to his enemies. He will always fight for what he believes is right, though Dartanian tends to see laws as “helpful suggestions” as opposed to strict guidelines. Dartanian is a firm supporter of King Garrick II and detests Andorians–-not for any discernible reason, but because it is the proper thing for a Gedonese gentleman to do. He hates orcs (their total disregard for table etiquette is appalling) but is otherwise welcoming of other races, especially elves. Like all Deloffre men, he is eager to please his mother, and he sees his adventures–however misguided–as a chance to make a name for himself as a famous Gedonese aristocrat.
