Harpies
Harpies are a race of all-female humanoids with wings and an assortment of avian features, ranging from feathery pinions in place of hair to birdlike talons instead of hands or feet. Every member of the species is female as harpies always seem to breed true, facilitating either trade and seduction with outsiders for the sake of reproduction from the more peaceful tribes, to brutal raiding and kidnapping of young males of other races to keep as breeding stock in the mountaintop nest-villages.
Harpies are one of the species native to Aelcantar, and live in isolated communities scattered across the various mountain ranges and forests of the continent, each tribe having a unique physiology and often different levels of aggression towards outsiders. Most tribes, even those generally peaceful, have a fierce rivalry with nearby goliath tribes as the competitive nature of the large humanoids tends to lead to a lack of available resources.
The majority of harpy tribes are pseudo-nomadic, often maintaining several permanent nests in various regions that they migrate between depending on season, weather and availability of food and male members of other races.
Harpyfolk have handled the coming of southerners to Aelcantar fairly well. Being a race that is capable of flight, staying out of the reach of the invaders has been easy enough for those tribes who want nothing to do with other races, and for those tribes who raid or trade for eligible males of other races, the influx of new races is a blessing indeed.
Harpies don't have any organized religion, or worship any specific gods as a rule, instead worshipping the wind, the open sky, and the clouds, what few spellcasters the race does produce leaning more towards sorcerous and shamanistic magic that wizardly learning or clerical miracles. In more recent years there has been increasing numbers of harpies integrating into the various colonies, serving as scouts, pathfinders, guides and any number of roles where the ability to fly and their native knowledge of the continent proves handy indeed.
Despite all this, the harpies, much like all the native races of Aelcantar are finding themselves increasingly on the backfoot. More land becoming unavailable for their migrations with every year, entire tribes slain so that greedy adventurers might plunder their nests, individuals captured and sold as exotic slaves back in the old world, and those who choose to assimilate slowly losing their cultural roots. The matriarchs grow increasingly worried, and many whisper on the wind of abandoning the old ways to forge a nation of harpies in order to get the strength necessary to preserve their species and repel these invaders from their ancestral lands.
The average harpy stands roughly five feet tall, with a ten foot wingspan. Appearing as humanoid with avian features that vary depending on subspecies and tribe. Harpies are born in large clutches and mature rapidly, reaching maturity by the age of ten, with an average lifespan of roughly fifty years.
