Festival of Embered Tales
History
The Festival of Embered Tales traces its origins to the early days of Freecrossing, when the Ciraen elf and Rhon explorers and cartographers first converged to chart the uncharted lands of Aerion.
It is said that the tradition began when the first mapmakers and wanderers agreed to meet annually during the 22nd or the Month of the Rising Sun (Sorin). They came not only to exchange maps but also to weave stories of distant places and hidden dangers. Around roaring bonfires, they shared not just knowledge but companionship, binding their communities with tales of wonder and daring. The gatherings soon attracted curious locals and even travelers from far away, turning it into a festival celebrated by all who valued exploration, curiosity, and unity.
Execution
The Lighting of the Bonfire
At sunset on the first day, a massive bonfire is lit in the center of Freecrossing, symbolizing a warm campire where friends and strangers alike can meet and share their stories. Each attendee is encouraged to throw a small branch or token into the fire, representing a discovery or journey undertaken during the year. Many smaller camfires will join around the large bonfire during the night, while more people gather.Sharing Maps and Secrets
Explorers and cartographers proudly display their maps and share knowledge of uncharted regions or new findings. It's customary to give a copy of a newly discovered route or location to another attendee, a tradition meant to ensure that the knowledge is preserved and expanded. Secrets of hidden places, such as ruins or natural wonders, are whispered by firelight, fostering a culture of trust and mutual respect.Exchanging Trinkets and Tales
On the second night, small trinkets or objects found during journeys - polished stones, fragments of ancient artifacts, or curiosities - are exchanged as tokens of goodwill. These exchanges are accompanied by detailed stories about the item's discovery, inspiring awe and camaraderie. The Night of Tales The final night is dedicated to storytelling, where participants gather around smaller fires to recount their adventures. Prizes are awarded for the most daring expedition, the most creative map, and the best story of the festival.Observance
