The Vael
Geography
Western Vael
The snow capped peaks of the Colm Mountains stand silently overlooking The Vael. The foothills swathed by new forests, channel the many mountain fed streams and give the impression of bundled pillows before a spreading green quilt.
Southern Vael
To the south the gentle Ames River weaves its course and is dotted with roses and reeds on both banks. Eventually the Ames River joins with the Vahn River and becomes the roaring Rahn. On the northern bank of the Ames one can look south into the forests of Lankia
Eastern Vael
Here the Rahn River turns north and feeds into the Broken Heath. On the east Bank where there is nothing but weeds and dried bramble, while on the west bank the lush grasses of the Vael grow thigh high. A stark reminder of the devastation wrought by the Spongepox.
Northern Vael
In the north, the Vael stretches to the rocky coast. Like a desperate green arm the Vael reaches the Leviathan Sea, hemmed in by the Colm Mountains and the Broken Heath. Looking into the east one can see the shore gently rise to cliffs
Central Vael
Further than the eye can reach, the Vael flows in all directions. A verdant sea broken only by far off mountains and barely visible streams. When traveling this open plain it is easy to get lost as there are few natural markers.
Here it is said the sun shows its true fire. As it rises it paints the sky a burnt orange before softening to a pale blue and as it sets the sky darkens to a rich indigo, setting fire to the clouds with pinks and yellows. When the sun fully sets and the insects begin their droning songs, on a cloudless night, the stars spark. A thousand glittering jewels in the sky
Fauna & Flora
Horse
Horses in the Vael travel in great herds, eating the grasses and drinking from the many streams. Said to be descendants of the Neirian Stallions, horses from the Vael are sturdier and stockier than other breeds and are used as mounts by the Riders of the Vael.
Bison
Like horses, bison travel in herds along the streams and eat the lush grasses of the Vael. Most have been domesticated by the Vaelon and are kept as beasts of burden and as food.
Blackwinged Hawk
The Blackwinged Hawk of the Vael most often roosts in the foothills of the Colm Mountains.
Natural Resources
Mining
The few mines in the Colm mountains produce iron while quarries cut stone for the homes and buildings of the Vaelon.
Agriculture
The many farms and ranches produce a bounty of grain, flax and beef. Wheat, barley, flax are the most common crops grown. While many ranchers breed the domesticated bison more renown is found in the breeding of horses.
Forestry
From the foothills of the Colm Mountains lumber is cut and sent down the many streams to the rest of the Vael.
