Barbarian

Barbarians were warriors that channeled the power of emotion into their warfare either through the use of trances or potions and scientific methods. Barbarians often exist in more tribal society where armour is less common forcing its owners to rely on alternate means or otherwise locations where the residents lack the natural physical strength to defend themselves.

Clerics, Paladins and blessed Barbarians have their Arcanum empowered by the gods. Drawing on the power of the void through the favour of mighty beings the magic of such holy warriors is taken not from within but from creation itself.   Barbarians draw their power often from the gods similarly to Paladins but applied differently. Many however channel it through ancestors who exist within the void granting it directly from that between the realm of balance and others.     Path of the Berserker   Masters of brute strength, berserkers enter viscous battle trances allowing them to fight with an unparalleled savagery that few dare challenge or question. Berserkers exist most often in tribal societies where such savagery is revered and admired but are a rare sight in 'civilized' lands where the brutish trance risks challenging those principles of honour and decency knights hold most dear.    Path of the Totem Warrior   In those lands where the gods are worshiped alongside spirits many barbarians seek to embody one of the spirit animals of the clan and observe the practices and nature of those beasts as they enter their battle trance. These warriors often alter their bodies with tattoos, markings and garb that alters their form to appear more like the beast they follow.   Path of the Ancestral Guardian   Common among Dwarven societies some barbarians are united with an ancestor through ancient rituals which allow them to fight with the force of their predecessors and fulfill any unfinished tasks that must be done. These Barbarians are revered among clans with the admiration of their bound ancestor alongside any of their own deeds and oft earn a place among the leadership for their efforts.   Following the restriction and criminalisation of unauthorised magic in the empire the binding ceremony was prohibited and anyone found so bound faced execution. The difficulty with which such a binding could be proven however often meant that fringe societies continued the practice without care of mind to the laws at large.    Path of the Storm Herald   Champions of Typhis, Storm Heralds earn their maddened battle trances amidst horrific weather conditions be it storms, blizzards, or hurricanes. Their trances are said to emanate with the chaos of the storm god himself and those who worship Typhis often view Storm Heralds as champions of their deity.    Following the restriction and criminalisation of unauthorised magic in the empire Storm Heralds were classified as rogue clergy unless they operated through the formal Falaran Tathamite Church. Those rare Heralds who agreed found themselves rendered little more than preachers but those who refused were pursued by templars as enemies of the faith.   Path of the Zealot   Warriors of the faith Zealots were common place among fringe tribes as champions of the Ederic gods whose trances channeled the essence of the divine. Zealot's tended to disappear in favours of Paladin's in 'civilised' societies but continued to exist in peasant and tribal communities.   Following the restriction and criminalisation of unauthorised magic in the empire Storm Heralds were classified as rogue clergy unless they operated through the formal Falaran Tathamite Church. Those rare zealots who agreed found themselves rendered little more than preachers but those who refused were pursued by templars as enemies of the faith.   Path of the Beast    Those infected with lycanthropy or with essences of the affliction passed down in blood can learn to take control of their power as Barbarians of the Beast. This school allows controlled releases of their affliction through their trance which allows the slaughter of their foes. The continued danger of spreading the affliction means these Barbarians are often hated and persecuted as much as their wild lycanthropic kin.    Path of Wild Magic   With the consumption of mysterious elixir's barbarians can attune their rage to the latent Arcanum in their body allowing it to be released in unpredictable and often uncontrol be ways that leave their foes confused and devastated. These barbarians are often outcasts or reserved as a final defense against encroaching threats. This power was also sought by alchemists who found ways to enter controlled states of rage using the latent arcanum.    Following the restriction and criminalisation of unauthorised magic in the empire the use of these potions was prohibited and their creation strictly monitored for limited research. Those who dared challenge this edict often found themselves forced to use their elixir's in a grand last stand against encroaching templars and inquisitors leading to them often endorsing the chruch view of the danger of magic.
